Desert bases

Hi all,

For one of my next projects i would like to have desert island look to my models base. how would i go about it i could just use normal GW sand on it but the particles would be a bit to big.

Any ideas on how to make an effective desert base

Oh, and the desert needs to be the \'typical\' sandy desert not rocky or anything like that

Cheers for your help

You can buy fine sand from D.I.Y shops, though it\'ll be in large bags, enough to last your modelling lifetime. The grains may be too big if you want it to look like a real beach properly in scale.

Just a thought, maybe if you add some colour into the mix in the snow recepies.

If you think that the GW sand is too coarse you can always use an old modelers trick and grind a tiny amount in a mortar & pestle.
You mum\'ll clip you round the ear for it but it does work, to help break the sand particles down to a smaller size.

The other place to try for a freebie is a stone mason. Stone dust is incredibly fine!

I found some very fine silica sand that\'s used for kids\' sand pits. Wonderful stuff. Of more substance than dust, but fine like the sand off a beach that sees a lot of wave action.

Apart from grain size, another important factor is consistency. It\'s all very well to get fine sand, but; if the grains are not all the same size, then it\'s going to detract from the desert theme.
