I have both games and all content. I love this game, but sadly my group has not played it for well over a year because of an argument over rules. And I need an official answer.
So here is the issue:
- When rolling attack and defense is calculated out. Is the damage dealt still "counted/remembered" when retaliation happens?
Say I have an enemy with 4 health and 6 to overkill. After defense is all done, the attack has 5 damage that goes to the enemy. So it is dead, but does retaliate. However, this enemy heals on critical . So the enemy retaliates and has 1 critical . What is now the result of this enemy? Does it heal 1 health and ends up having 1 life managing to survive, OR since the attack originally did 5 damage does it not heal?
From what I understand in the rules, Attack and Defense is all done and finished before retaliate starts. It's a separate "phase" and we then move to the next Retaliation "phase". So no matter if the damage was 5, the enemy only has 4 health so it is 0 when the retaliate is in effect and it will therefore be healed 1 and still be alive after.
But other people in the group disagreed, and say the attack damage is still in effect, and the heal is negated by the faith damage. I find this to be wrong to save up and remember the damage when moving over to a new step in the process.
This disagreement ended up in causing huge conflict and killed the game in my group. I really hope to get a conclusive answer here so we can start playing this fantastic game again.
