Different primer other than Citadel

I just have a quick question, I did a search but couldn't find a satisfactory answer. I was in GW, and it has been awhile since I have bought primer, so I looked at it and was astonished to see it was 15 bucks for a can!!! I'm just like holy geez that's expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions as to other options that are comparable but may be less expensive?
I remember the days when I could buy a citadel paint for one dollar, I actually have a few sittin around still that are usable (Putrid Green anyone? lol), unlike the ones they have now which cost four times as much and dry up in a couple months... so lame~

I use a grey primer made by RJ London. Their website says they are made in Sigapore. Some sources also say that any automotive primer will work. Just be careful not to spray it too thickly. :)

I like the P3 primer better than the GW stuff it is different in so many ways just doesn't seem to last as long though.

Any Auto primer will work on the metal minis, these are usually cellulose based, and I've never had any problems on the plastics either. But if you aren't sure use an acrylic based primer for both ( I think most manufacturers are heading towards Acrylics these days anyway)

gw is undercoat, not primer.

cheaper and better quality is automotive as mick mentioned. i use (and have started many using) halfords, you can have black, white or grey too.

i'll second Devon's vote of confidence for the P3 primers...
they work great, and cost $5 less than GW's spray...

if you have a hardware store close to you, i hear plenty of good things about the $5 cans of Krylon...

cheers

I absolutely love the Valejo primers. They are amazing, especially the black. The GW black primer is glossy compared to valejo's black primer:O

I swear by Tamiya Primer, only primer I've used for the last 15 years.
Egg shell finish, never fuzzed up, sprayed outside in freezing weather and on humid days. Runs almost disappear.

Armory

Armory primer works great...From the folks at Knights at the dinner table...
Costs about $5.99, big can lasts a long time...

i gave Armory a try, but their primer and varnish fuzzed up more than any other brand i've tried...
it really hates humidity...
i chucked 'em in the trash, they frustrated me so much, and caused so much extra work...

cheers

I use Hycote grey primer, very cheap and works great. Einion educated me about this as I too used to think that citadel spray paint was a primer. Glad I took his advice and tried it

I've never ever used the GW products, instead i use acrillics from my local hobby store that are way cheaper.

As for primer, a good quality automotive primer or even the Krylon stuff works good if you make sure you spray from the right distance.

I have stopped using GW undercoat in favour for hycote grey primer as well, all I can say is its sooooo much better, so much I needed to add more o's :p and it works out a good deal cheaper

Wow, looks like I definitely got some options. I feel duped and kind of retarded for thinking Citadel ~undercoat~ was actually primer. *smacks head* I'll probably end up getting a few of the above mentioned kinds and giving them a whirl.
Thanks a ton for the suggestions!!!

don't worry, MANY do get into that way of thinking. it's not the end of the world but proper primer will hold to the surface better and probably cost less than gw...

I've been using Duplicolor sandable auto primer on resin, metal and plastics with great success. About half the price as the other name brands and works great for me.

Plasticote do the usual three black, white, and grey
some have noticed a slight tackiness with them when trying to paint straight after priming. I usually prime stuff a couple of days ahead so I've not noticed it. They cover really nicely too

:glasses-nerdy:hmmm..... may try a little experiment with my putty oven

OK, your avatar does not have any info on where you live, nor do you tell us. There is a vast difference in availability between UK, Germany, Hong Kong and the U.S.

If you are in the U.S. (and some of these are available in some of the rest of the world):
