Dilemma...

Matty - sorry if I sound unneccessarily sour, but I get annoyed when I hear speak of us working stiffs as pitiable, as if working for a living should be somewhat distasteful to normal people.

We are a pitiable lot! Working for a living sucks. There are far better things we should all be doing....problem is most of us self-induced creature comforts and now we have the responsibility to HAVE to do this. (and it isn\'t all bad...)

Matty hasn\'t shouldered that burden yet, so why not take a chance?

Don\'t worry about it, no need to apologise! We all have different wants. A lot of people probably do want to \'grind down\' who are my age. But i\'v had this opportunity and after lots of decision I figured I\'d enjoy it more.
Like vikey mentioned I haven\'t shouldered a burden yet, and I\'v honestly got nothing to lose, so il go for it.

Glad you committed to a decision, Matty! I have always wanted to go to Spain, but haven\'t gotten around to it yet. Where will you be? I especially want to go to Valencia to see the amazing aquarium that was built there.

It is in Costa Del Sol, a built up tourist area stretching right along the South Coast.
Then come October time we will be setting up in either the French or Italian Alps in a ski resort. Who knows after that?

I agree with several others that your primary reason for going should be to try something different, not just to be with your girl. If things work out with her, great, but even if they don\'t look at this move as an opportunity.

One of the reasons I did decide to do it was the chance to not be tied down to one location. I like the idea of setting up camp, learning new skills, meeting new people then packing up and moving on.
If I do that every 6 month with Laura then great! If I do it without Laura for whatever the reasons may be then it is still great!

I also feel great that I am just doing something head first for once. This is probably the first time I have felt I have done something completely spontaneous. I must admit it has given me a great feeling of sense of self.

Also Girona is closer for the World Expo :bouncy:

Ahh, how soon they forget... Spain and Canada were close to war only 15 years ago or so. The English back then supported us but I guess not so much now. As I recall there were English fishing boats flying Canadian flags in our support now they are all wishing to go to Spain.

Back then we had fishing boats these days with EU rules and quotas most of the boats belong to Spain...

probably fishing in our waters too
Yep, if you go to Hull and what used to be other big fishing ports most of the trawlers putting in are non British, the British boats couldn\'t get quotas for our waters and if they did it was miniscule compared to what the French & Spanish were being given to fish our waters.

I did the same thing you\'re considering, Matty. I moved to Japan primarily to be with a lady friend ^^; I quit my job to move into a very underpaid part time teaching job. I did have other reasons to come over such as studying the language though. I\'m in a
different better paid IT job now - but it\'s looking rocky (but that\'s another story!)

I\'m still with her but we\'ve been though some serious ups and downs. I don\'t know if I can be much of a help but I\'ll try.

Learn to love the country you move too and take time to learn the language and culture.

If you don\'t, and I found this, you\'ll start to blame lots of problems on the country itself. Japan isn\'t perfect, but neither is the UK.

If you\'re going to work there, seek advice before going - labour law especially. I\'ve no idea how it works in Spain, but in Japan most foreign workers (re: teachers) work under some very very dodgy laws (such as making sure they\'re paid for certain hours so they don\'t need to be enrolled into Government health schemes etc).

The life experience you gain is worth it alone.

I am going to add my part and say, if you love her, go and be with her. Jobs are always around but finding that special person, maybe never again.
My wife and i went to Japan to teach (at my choosing) and while we could have stayed there for many years (i loved my work and where we lived in the country), she wanted to come back and work as a psychologist. I complained but never the less i came back. I had gotten a decent job in the city but within 6 months she said she had to move to the country to get experience. I complained but i followed her. She got work as a psych and each year has moved up but also moved closer back to the city. I am lucky with that i have been able to keep the same job working for a good company with an excellent boss who understands exactly what i want to do. But she wanted to move back to the city so i complained, but was ready to follow her. At this time my company was involved with some major construction projects and has teamed up with a multinational company to deliver the works. They have offered me a position that is far better to anything i would have gotten on my own with only an Arts (humanities) degree as a tertiary degree. So while i complained about my wife moving all over the place and dragging me around, it has worked out so well. If i had of left her because i was happy with what i was doing, i wouldn\'t be where i am now.

I say go for the girl and if you are a good and dedicated worker, you can find another great job.

lol got any jobs in Osaka? ^^;

ABSO-(insert expletive of your choice)-LUTELY!!!!

Working for a living is a hateful thing. Avoid it for as long as is humanly possible. One thing\'s for sure, when you\'re old and in the adult diaper stages, you won\'t be thinking about the wonderful days you spent working! I certainly won\'t!

Guys, if you are unhappy with your current situations, change them. While many applaud Matty for taking the chance, what is stopping the rest of you? I know many people say family and jobs, but would your family be happy knowing that you are sick of doing the same thing day in and day out? Look for the other options out there. Apply for them. If ou don\'t get it, well you still haven\'t lost anything, but if you can get a new position then it makes you happier and if it is somewhere different, then you and your family get to see some place new.

Jazz, give it a rest mate. Seriously, you sound like a pastiche of a cliche of an outmoded way of thinking. I was expecting the Hovis advert music to play as I read your post.

Yeah, I realise having a career is a bit of an archaic way of doing things, but I have always been a traditionalist. I\'m thinking of jacking it all in and joining a commune in Bolivia, I can send you the details if you\'re interested.

Yes, quite!

You need to live a little my little flower ;)

Hi everyone...just thought id post a reply for myself saying as i didnt have a clue what was going on till i got a call at 1am to say he was coming over! All i have ever wanted to do is see the world but all matthew ever wanted to do was settle down, which i tried for over 4 years of my teenage years. Iim not sure what made me do it but i just decided to get up and go to be a holiday rep and ended up in spain, now been here 2 months and decided this is the life for me, i asked matthew if he´d like to do a ski season with me and he said no. It just wasnt fair for us both when i recently decided i had no intention of going back to the uk after my 6 month so thats why i decided to finish it...which i only done as we wanted differenct things, just to make it clear i would do almost anything for matthew but not go back to the uk, working 9-5 and settling down...dont get me wrong, i want that just now at the age of 20. So im pleased with his decision, yet also think its about time he realised he was 20 not 40 and cant wait to see him again!!! So thanks for everyones advise, I no it helped. x Laura
