Diorama Brainstorming.

hey guys. i\'ve been thinking about creating a small scene for entering in GD next year. I just want to bounce an idea off the more experienced of you guys to see how i could achieve what im thinking of.
Basically the design is simple, a few IG in action poses, being directed by a space marine. One of the guardsmen will be facing away from whats happening (towards people who will be looknig at the model) It\'l be set in a small urban ruin type base.
The guardsmen looking out will be painted nice and bright . But the background (including the other people in the scene) will have more faded colours with eventually all the colour fading away to black and white the close to the edges of the scene it gets. More to try and draw the focus to the main guy at the front who im thinknig will have something akin to \"the thousand yard stare\" making it seem as if nothing else around him is effecting him.

its really a muddle of ideas in my head. so if anybody can make sence of it i\'ll give you a cookie lol :) Cheers.

So who\'s the main focus?
This spooked IG or the random marine?

Can you scan a sketch or something?

golden rule of good dios, make sure it looks good from all angles! From what you said above I might suggest that you have a dual focus, the marine issuing an order to a spooked ig...Then you have the marine and the ig in full colour, with everything else dulled down...maybe he\'s bottling when the rest of his regiment are biting the bullet (literally)... dunno. but yeah, having them both as a focus, one with their chest one way and the other with their body broadly facing the other, it\'ll look good all the way around.

at the moment theres nothing on paper. i will sketch the idea soon and post it up. i liek the idea of the marine and the spooked IG being a more central focus where my initial idea was just to have the IG. As i said its a big mass of ideas in my head but thats how things come together in my mind

Right. heres my basic sketch showing the layout of the idea. Baricade at the right of the base where a sniper and guardsman are already firing from, another guardsman running along the wall to position himself with the other two. and our focal point of the spooked IG and the marine. arrows are showing the direction in which they are all looking with the marine pointing towards the baricade while looknig over his other shoulder at Mr Spooked.

the idea is good but what about doing it with the marine shooting the spooked ig in the back as he\'s running off still having the rest of the ig fighting like you have it already. representing the grim reality of the 40k universe \"fight or die\"

it was a thought that crossed my mind. but i would have prefered to have a Commissar doing the shooting. where the marine looks liek he thinks the man can still fight (and maybe he NEEDS him in on it?)

ok what about having the marine placing a reasuring hand on the spooked guards shoulder? or the marine with his arm across the guards chest stopping him from running

I will answer this as soon as I have Internet at home again (about Christmas...)...

I have a brilliant idea, but it takes more time to write... damn iPod with tiny lettrs...

Granddad!
you could do a box diorama, that keep the focus on the IG as you originally intended

along the lines of some of this, maybe even with a top and other side on too

lol thanks! plenty of ideas to get stuck into. that reassuring hand ideas got me thinking. it would defenatley bring across the fact this guardsman is a bit frayed round the edges :) And thanks Mick for the great links. note taking time me thinks !
