Subject: Diorama.
The base is blackwood and I actually built it myself from a rough piece of timber I had under the house. The sections diorama are sitting on are mdf.
The diorama is going to be a ruined outdoor gothic setting with a central feature ( see photo ). I am going to cut up the buildings and use around this raised section. I was originally thinking of using Logan Grimnar or brother stern as the central figure and being surrounded and atttacked by tyranids. I decide upon logan as a more dynamic figure and he suits the setting well. I am very happy with the wooden base I have built it myself in the last three days ( Monday- Thursday last week). It has a diameter of about 29cm and is made from blackwood. Not bad considering it was a rough square piece of timber.
I started work on the terrain on the diorama last friday night and have basically finished the general outline. I am going for a snow swept landscape using Logan. I agree he is a better figure in this setting and the miniature has a far more dynamic pose. This will help for this project.
I started by placing all the larger pieces first using knead it to hold the pieces in place. This is a quick process as it only takes five minutes to set rock hard, you came even pick it up by the pieces attached. The ruined building pieces were also cut up and super glued into position. When this is dry I added different rocks/ gravel/ and gradients of sand. I used PVA glue around the larger pieces to hold this in place. Then leave to dry overnight. This morning I spent about another hour adding other ruined sections and adding more gravel/rocks etc, including some seaweed to represent dead plants.
Oh the brass rod is the centre hole which I am thinking about placing Logan at the centre and it is also the guide hole for screwing the scene to the base.
This is what I have so far.
I have mainly been working on painting the diorama. So far I think it is coming along ok. I still have to do alot of detail, especially woking out in future where to place the snow. Most of the detail yet to be done is darking the ruined buildings and adding the rust.
Latest update. The base is more or less finished. I will probably add more detail including leaves and plants once I have added the miniatures.
First tyranid finished yesterday and I am currently working on 3 more. It will still take me a week or two to finish this, with Logan probably going to take the longest.
