dipping debate

You know, crap like this is why I\'m not a Civil War Reenactor. With the vast majority of them its absolute perfection, or don\'t bother playing.

Got to go with the crowd that says its a technique. Nothing more, nothing less.

@Pegazus - were your tree\'s Happy then, and are they Happy now? Cause really thats all that matters in the end, Happy Trees.

Is ink paint?
Is powdered pigment paint?
Is pastel dust paint?
Is printer\'s ink paint?
Is varnish paint?
Is spackle paint?
Is gilding paint (yes, I\'ve seen a few figures where parts were gilded)?

There are many multi-media approaches to colouring and weathering minis and the end results are all that matter.

Dipped stuff usually looks like exactly what it is, and wouldn\'t stand up to carefully-painted competition. But say there\'s some guy who has developed his dipping method, maybe with postwork using a brush, Q-tips, sponges or whatever, and then follows with good detail painting. If the finished mini kicks ass then it kicks ass; doesn\'t matter a jot how it was done.

It is sculpting, there\'s zero question about that. The only question that\'s important is whether it\'s good sculpting.

Oi vey - nobody is attacking you, they\'re attacking your opinion. Totally, completely different thing.

You SO need to learn to distinguish the difference if you want to participate in online fora.

its a personal level of aesthetics that each person follows.

as a child we think our art is great
then we revert to it only being good if its realistic and this is a level of aesthetic understanding that many of us keep over the years.
as time goes on many people see a work of art as only being good if time was invested into it. but what about art that is done quickly and someone still finds it beautiful. this is the level of aesthetic understanding that many people stay at after their late teens to early 20\'s. the point is to grow past that and find that art is not about any of these things. its the idea.

i quote joseph bueys \"Thinking is form\"

great words to live by.

I sure hope that\'s not true. I can\'t live without magic wash!

okay not on topic but I gotta ask whats up with printer\'s ink, I\'ve seen in mentioned once or twice. I always thought it was in reference to ink in a printer cartridge but seeing it again I am wondering if it\'s from the printing profession? and when I google it it\'s just inkjet printer cartridges.

Any pointers to articles on em or info would be most appreciated.

In this instance I\'m pretty sure Einion is refering to Newspaper printing ink which as I recall is a very thick gelatinous material.

Or of course he could be referring to Screen printing ink.

Some of those dipped pieces looked nice in all fairness. It\'s only now though, a day after looking at the links, that I know where I\'ve seen the style before: cheap ornaments!

Anyway, I\'m looking forward to the next thrilling 7-page instalment from Shadzar

I hope you\'re not getting to upset over all this Shadzar, I just think most of us are reacting strongly to this \"debate\" where you have a completely closed mind. Why start a thread if you aren\'t willing to consider alternatives?

I\'m pretty sarcastic most of the time, and I do hope that nobody\'s offended because that\'s rarely my intent, but I think this whole thread is a waste of everybody\'s time (mods included) if nobody is willing to take anyone else\'s opinions seriously.

@Shadzar: if you want to know why people are argumenting against you instead of the thread-starter and the second poster, it\'s because you provide arguments... :)

How can it possibly be cheating? ??? It\'s a method to put paint on to a mini! Just like painting with a brush is.

If a mini or army should win some painting award and is dipped one would assume that the other candidates are of a lower quality and, thus, do not deserve to win.

Well I know I\'m going back to the beginning but you can\'t say it any clearer and succinctly than this. Anders nailed it here.

The term is awfully generic, hardly surprising it\'s one of those things that\'s not obvious unless you already know about them or the context makes it clear - these are metallics, made for offset lithography (so they\'re essentially like oil paint). They\'re noted for being highly pigmented and for having very fine particles. Quite a few historical miniaturists use them, often with some added Liquin or oil.

They\'re especially good for the yellow metals, which often aren\'t as good as the white metals in metallic paints.

Or really good onion rings in ranch dressing. Or lobster in butter.

Well if dipping is cheating then certainly so must be the use of inks. Air brushing can\'t be legit. Better not touch spray primers or spray varnishes...

I like dipping french fries in milkshakes. Now that\'s quality dipping.

Or dipping crabs in butter...
Oh wait, we are talking about miniatures.

Honestly; I can see both sides of the arguement. I voted that its cheating because I was under the impression that it went against the rules of a competition.

I don\'t think it is elitist or ignorant if you voted that it is cheating. I think it is just an opinion.

I do get he feeling that Shadzar isn\'t going ot be on this site long.;)

Me too Rev.

Anyway, after glancing at the thread again I noticed Shadzar wasn\'t the guy who started the discussion. That probably skewed my responses somewhat.

I\'m still not convinced that it\'s cheating in any way/shape/form, but I\'m still willing to be proven wrong. The pie crust example didn\'t work for me because dipping isn\'t the same as purchasing a pre-made product, and honestly pre-made products are usually good. Dipping generally isn\'t considered to be a high quality product.

Side note: if I can\'t sell/trade my Khemri stuff any time soon, I\'m kinda considering dipping it all. I really don\'t have the patience to paint that many skeletons, and the color scheme is one of the few that would work with dipping :p I have plenty of other army projects that are absolutely top notch, for example I plan on doing a battle company of Blood Ravens up to the same standard as my model that got bronze in 40k single last year. How\'s that for ambition?
