I\'ve found 2 really good articles on dipping -

I\'m seriously tempted to try a massive tyranid horde in a month.

have any of you guys tried this before?
is it as easy as it looks?

any pictures of the results?

Seen this technique before. Looks messy but is a quick way to get figs on the table.

??? You use wood stain, not little bottles of acrylic!

I think Dipping looks good on Tyranids, but that\'s about it.

yeh i have always fancied a TOTAL horde army of nids, but have always been put off by

a) the £ cost
and
b) painting 100 gaunts would take me 5 years.

this dipping technique makes it viable i think, it also means u can buy cheap, badly painted ebay gaunts and spray em up and dip them without the normal nastyness.

i\'ll maybe do a WIP on it after xmas.

If you mix really strong ink (dried GW or an artist ink) with 50% gloss or matte varnish you get the same result but have more control over where the color goes.

It takes a little longer if you do highlights and overall takes more time but they can be done in an assembly line like the dip. It\'s just a brush dip.

This technique does seem solid for \"biological\" figures - Kroot, lizardmen, Nids. But it seems to give poor(er) results on anything technological. But I guess if the alternative is fielding a half-painted army...

well, gave it a go on a few test figures.

B&Q (UK DIY store) werent specific on whether their stain was \'polyurethane based wood stain\' or not, so i bought a tester tin and dipped a few bits i had lying around:



simple base colours, then dipped and dulcoated.

what do u reckon?

it seems quite a \'chocolaty brown to me, i thought i might mix in some sandolin varnish or something.

I had a tin of chestnut wood stain in the shed, after watering it down to a brushonable consistency i find that it is a fantastic colour for quick metallic rusting.

To get the full on effect with dipping you really do seem to need the Liberon woodstain. It seems to have a consistency that you can\'t find in any UK products that makes it work just right.

I used to work in the Northern Europe office at GW, which is like speed painting central, so I\'ve had way more exposure to dipping than I\'d really like (it\'s not to my tastes. Great if you like your models to look like caramel... thats about it!).

If you do want to get some though it is available throughout Scandinavia. The bloke who did all the different dipping in the first link you posted used to send it to us from Norway actually. He does have links to GW though, I don\'t think he does it for anyone!

You can get it from a Danish hobby store called Dragon\'s Lair for sure, but I don\'t know if they will deliver.

If you do plan on doing a whole army I also recommend rigging up a base clamp in a Dremel attachment to quickly spin off the excess dip with that, rather than knackering yourself out manually spinning hundreds of spinegaunts!

Oh yeah, and one other thing, be bold and contrasty with your base colours. Subtlety and dipping don\'t mix!

wouldnt mind some advice on which colour you guys thinks works best of the three i expermimented with:

I have my favourite, my wife thinks differently!

Which do you prefer 1, 2 or 3 and why!

Number 3. The colours look natural, although number 2 has good contrasting colours the brown varnish doesn\'t sit right.

So NUMBER 3

(I wonder if you can do this with coloured wood stain, mixed with clear varnish???)

I\'d say not 2.
It looks too plant-like. The green isn\'t working for me.

I like 1 because it looks like he\'s a cockroach relative.
I like 2 because the contrast makes it more visually interesting.

If it were my army I\'d go with 1, but I think you\'ll be just as happy with 3.

I found a slightly lighter dip, and went with the green, (which was my wifes fav - and all purchases go through her!)

Looking good, I still think when the varnish clumps up on the green it spoils it, but when together thay don\'t look half bad.
