Directional lighting

hi all
im just wonderign if any1 has any idea how to do directional lighting. ive seen it alot but cant find any advice. speciffiacly its stuff like glowing marine eyes, light from fires, and power swords cating glows
a speedy reply would be great

directional lighting is just shading an highlighting the mini as if the lightsource was coming from a certain direction.

the glowing effect is called osl and theres a couple of tutorials on here, but if you want any more advice on osl then ask mr osl himself \"shawn\" i forgot wot his name is on here lol its shawn something ???

if you never try you will never succeed.
every body starts out crap at something, it\'s persistance and practice that improve our skills.

give it a go and then ask shawn for honest critisism, he\'s great at helping people, especialy with osl.

you could try a light drybrush in a really light colour (white, or bleaces bone. something with good contrast and coverage) radiating out from the light source, this would give you a nice estimate on where to paint the high-LIGHTS (lol)

you could even do the entire osl by drybrushing i think, would this work????
What do the veterans think, it won\'t be as nice as regular OSL, but it might give a tabletop mini just that little bit extra.
anyone tried this?

furthermore, just try it on something, you wont get any better if you don\'t push yourself.

Yeah, this would work but it\'d still be drybrushing. But as you say, for a tabletop mini... worth a try.

OSL, in particular the very good stuff, often isn\'t strictly true to the natural fall of light and the drybrushing method will share this in a different way. Only by trying it oneself, comparing results to other minis - as well as paintings or illustrations, which we should use more as guides - can one see what\'s what.

you can see how the highlights and shading are done properly for osl on canvass compared to what mini painters do.

Its spelt Derby...

If you are ever in Derby go to the Derby museam, they have quite a lot of stuff by him and its all good (lots of osl). There is also a fairly good collection of miletary equipment and a life size cross section of a trench and loads of natural history stuff (inc hippo bones found in the trent river). They have mummies too.. (still at 16 to scared to go in there..)
