Display cabinets...

I\'ve got to the point where I would like to display the minis I have in a cabinet... nothing massive as I don\'t have lots.

It has all the features I want, looks nice and is a reasonable price... has anyone seen anything that could do the job better or for less money?

These cabinets can be SO expensive!

Got mine on the wall in the living room and it looks class when it\'s full. It\'s got more shelves than those stand alone jobbies. Your minis get lost in those things...

I checked Ikea, they have only floor standing ones of that type and the lighting method looks nasty. shame, because the prices are really good... £35 for the floor standing one!

OUCH Squidders that is expensive even by my standards.

Get yourself down to Ikea, I have four stand alone display cabinets and 4 wall display ones and I haven\'t paid more than £70 for any of them.

I ahve 2 of THESE
You\'ll need to buy the lights seperaye but the are not that expensive and there are companies where you can get additional bits to go in it, I have some plastic steps that I use in mine so that I have three teers rather than just a flat shelf.

Unfortunately the UK stores no longer do the £35 sliding door wall mounted units

I have one from IKEA, not the one Scott has though. The problem with it is that it\'s not dust free. So I\'m thinking of getting a new one.

I have also thought about just using a more regular cupboard but with glass shelves and good internal lighting. I\'m a bit concered that many of the miniatures I have might be substantionally washed out in a couple of decades...

Sadly, they appear to have been discontinued I have two and they\'re great (though getting a little over-full these days!)

Lighting in glass shelved mini cabinets is mostly a waste of time. They just cast ugly shadows everywhere and I\'m a bit dubious about blasting paint with light.

I\'ve had loads of cabinets over the years and that one is by far the best I reckon. Keeps them virtually dust free as well.

NSA yep they are the ones I have two of them and have been trying to get more for over a year now to no avail so I bought two others instead.

I would have got the ones Scott mentioned but they will not fit above my desk units and give me the space I wanted underneath

I agree with Scott though lighting them is not a good idea unless you plan on putting lots of lights on each shelf. I have lights on 2 of the free standing ones I have downstairs but I hardly turn them on.

War Griffon, you mentioned that you managed to get hold of some plastic steps to go in your cabinets, i have the same free standing ikea cabinet and as soon as i set it up i thought it could do with something like that.

would you happen to have a link to the companies who produce the bits and peices to use in the cabinet please?

Yes, that would be GREAT! I have a free-standing one myself and currently am just using terrain hill pieces to give everything a not so \"flat\" look.

Any help War Griffon would be appreciated.

I have just checked their web site but can\'t find them on there however they do have the three high ones on EBay Here

But they are very helpful and can also make what you want if you explain it to them in an e-mail or by phone.

I had some small two high ones made to go in the wall units like NSA has showed, the only limit is the size and length as you can get a bit of distortion/warping as they are made from perspex but by haveing them made shorter I got two in on a shelf. Use the measurements from the 3 teer and knock off a teer and they will be fine, I found that the 3 teer does soring a bit under the weight though so would recomend two teer max this will give you a space in front of the stand on the glass shelf big enough for more figures

Just took two quick photo\'s so you can get an idea of what I am talking about here. Excuse the flash glare and the orange back ground of the one I still need to redecorate that room

Yes they are all RT era Marines

And this is the larger cabinet, the figures on this shelf are all ranging in size from 54mm to 90mm in scale so you can get an idea of the space.

one last question if you dont mind, did you have the shelves for your free standing cabinet custom made? or are they the standard size they are selling on ebay?

i did see a picture of the 2 teired steps and that looks that way to go for me i think, unfortunately they didnt have any actually on ebay so i think i will drop them an email

In the free standing cabinet I have used the two teir steps as sold on Ebay but they will give you a gap of about 3 inches so I cut one stand int 3 sections using a jig saw on a slow speed (if you go to fast it will melt the perspex into the blade) but if I get any more then I will get him to custom make some as it is less messing about and looks nicer

Bloody hell! For the price of a few of those acrylic steps, you could get one of these:

Strip Heater

You could knock your own out for just a few quid. And undercut that joker by a fair bit to make it pay for itself!
