Do you buy more than you can paint?

When reading Supervike\'s Forgeworld thread, I noticed there are a lot of people that buy a lot more than they can paint. It seems that I am one of the very rare exceptions to that rule. I always try to carefully plan my purchases to fit them into my painting schedule, and most of the time I finish project before starting new ones.

For example: right now I\'m working on two projects, and have no other unpainted minis at home (apart from some left-overs and minis recieved at contests and events). I also want to expand my Confrontation Drunes army, but I\'m going to wait to buy these minis until I have finished my two current projects.

I buy in bulk

I think I will never have all of my minis painted. I have just begun to accept that that is okay. Some of them don\'t deserve to be painted.
See, I keep buying these \"can\'t beat it\" bulk offers, usually games. I have this idea that I will paint all the minis in my Conquest of the Empire game, my Samurai Swords game, my Axis and Allies game, my Carnage game, my 2 copies of Siege of the Citadel game. Then I go and do things like find the old 1992 space wolves box of minis at a garage sale for 25 cents....
Meanwhile I\'m preparing to take the bar exam and don\'t have time to paint anything.

For anyone who doesn\'t know, Siege of the Citadel was the original board game version of War Zone. Unfortunately there are some butt ugly minis in there, but there\'s also some pretty cool ones.

I usually have several more minis than I have room on my painting table. I see a mini at my FLGS (favorite local gaming store) and get it (if the wallet can approve). Then it may sit for a while on my table until I get inspired or see one here that I really enjoy the colors, etc. Or it may be that I am learing a new technique on a smaller piece before trying it on a larger one (scale mail on a human instead of my large dragon\'s scales.)

I tend to buy minis on the \'wow\' factor alone, never mind if I can actually match the quality of the sculpt with an equally stunning paintjob or not.

So I\'ve got a fair bit of spares ...

I have that terrible \"hoarders\" mentality...

I know I will never possibly paint all the minis I have bought, but long ago I have decided that although I may not become a \"world class painter\" I MIGHT become a \"world class collector!\"lol

I have also made that goofy pledge of \"I will not buy another mini until I paint these\" but that lasts until some company puts out a cool mini or offers free shipping.....

I never spend more than I can afford, and actually, I am rather cheap when it comes to spending money on myself. Minatures are my only real vice.... But I might be getting off cheaper if I became addicted to crack. lol

I buy way more than I can paint. I buy bulk if there\'s any discount and by bulk I mean hundreds of $. I get all excited about a new army or game buy it, paint a few models then get sidetracked... I am also a hoarder, I have boxes of stuff at my parents house.

I have deceided to do the following:

1) Stick to collecting armies whose gaming style suit my playing style.

2) Only buy minis from now on I REALLY like and don\'t buy complete armies for every range that comes out...

3) Buy less, paint more.

It seems to be working reasonably at the moment.

I am with Super on this one, I can\'t really call myself a \'painter\' at the moment as I haven\'t painted a mini for over three years, but I am a world-class collector.
I could not possibly paint all the minis I own now if I did nothing else and lived to be a thousand years old.
I tend to buy painted minis now, here and there, and will continue to do this even when I pick my brushes up again. I enjoy collecting the work of others and it has changed the nature of my collection/interest in minis.

I think this phenomenon is more common than not.

I remember reading the editorial page in \"Fine Scale Modeler\" once how the editor and many of his friends had shelves and shelves of unfinished model kits awaiting assembly....

Many other hobbies/activities have similar traits. My brother, for instance, has more fishing lures and jigs than there are fish in the river.

Is it a sickness? ???

i am at the beginning stages of this i have about 10 minis right now that are unpainted but have decided not to paint anything else till i get into my new house. it should be fuinnished in september. until then if i see a cool mini ill most likely grab it.lol

I\'m not doing too badly at the moment, I can usually split the models I have unpainted into two categories, ones I plan to paint, and ones I have no plans to paint in the future.

Plan to paint:
tau and kroot (coming along apace)
Hybrid minis
Warmachine Khador stuff

No plans (dooooooooooooomed )
Loads of silver helms
Minis from the first LotR boxed game
Squiggoth (approaching this with a paintbrush is like pushing two identical poles of a magnet together, you get close, but you never quite make it )

Oh I always buy more than I can paint! but then, I am a woman and shopping is a sport! :bouncy: Half the fun of painting is finding that perfect mini to paint! but alas our local gaming store went out of business, so now I can only shop online. sigh, I miss the pleasure of holding, turning gazing at all sides of the mini before I buy I think I am going to go cry now...later!

Of course! One of the biggest signs of FIGMENTIA is the increased piles of lead and pewter that build up and the way the balance between the painted and unpainted gets skewed so badly...

Of course, buying them in stores is one thing, and then there are the deals on ebay, and companies sending stuff... and... and... ARGH! WHY CAN\"T SOMEONE SEND ME BRUSHES INSTEAD?????

I keep telling myself to stop... I have enough to keep me busy for years ( yes literally years... and years... and years). I don\'t need any more right now. But then I see something I like and I think.. you know I might not see that again, could go OOP... Better not risk it. BUY IT NOW! It\'s kind of like a heroin addiction.. but cheaper and less damaging to my life in general. Even though I know some of my freinds think I\'m a nutter. But then they can\'t paint worth a damn... they just don\'t get it. That\'s why we\'re all here, it\'s kind of like group therapy. But should we be encouraging each other in our addiction? It\'s too early in the week for philosophical discussions
