Do you see spots before your eyes??

Has anyone else noticed in the last few years there are random patterns of red dots in movies? I just saw Taken - with Liam Neisom (sp?), [size=-1]there was a lot of hitting and kicking involved [/size] - and there was a TON of these in it. They are there for I would guess 1 frame or so....very quick, but definately there.

Anyone know what this is and why?

It\'s not the cigarette burn either. That\'s that huge spot in the upper right that happens a few times during the movie - to indicate when the projectionist should change reels.

I\'m not sure what type of technology movie projectors use any more, so it\'s hard for me to comment. But many digital screens that suffer from a lot of signal noise have red staticky type dots flashing around randomly. I guess technically they have the other colors as well, but the red seems more noticeable.

My parents\' plasma screen has it (it\'s quite bad with the digital cable box) when they don\'t hook something up through the HDMI ports.

I thought i was seeing these things as well when the GF and i went to see watchmen (or at least i think it was watchmen, may have been anotgher film)

I have deffo seen these red dots\\marks, thought my eyes were going funny!

Actually, I suspect it\'s some kind of code so they can identify the cinema that a pirated distribution of the movie originated at. Commercial film piracy is mostly not the shaky cam-under-a-hoodie versions we\'ve all seen once or twice, it\'s organized and done by cinema employees.

Not that I have an ounce of sympathy for the entertainment industry on this issue, mind you. Their thuggish legal behaviour shows that \"stealing\" their content is like stealing from the Mafia - technically illegal, but not a crime for which the victim should be allowed any recourse.

No, it\'s definately not static and I\'ve only seen it at the theatres.

Maybe it\'s the tracking points used in CGI? I know that they often project laser dots onto objects on the set so that the 3D modelers can track the movement of the camera in the computer. I was under the impression that these dots were removed in processing, but (not having seen any new movies in a while) maybe some got left behind.

Shawn, looks like they\'ve captured the UFO\'s on camera......

I have not been to a movie theater in years. Last few time I tried taking my wife and enjoying an evening, all I could see was the teenagers opening & closing their cel phones (and they have to hold them up to read the texts - cannot do that in their laps.).

Got my large plasma, my HD satellite and surround sound at home. Cokes & popcorn are at a much better price at home too.....

Aah okay I was under the impression that the anti-piracy measures were more of a watermark than a series of dots projected a few times.

TBH I\'ve never seen these, but then, maybe I have and didnt realize it. When I was a kid my dad worked in a machine shop so I grew up hanging out with welders and whatnot, and once I got too close and BAM, welder went off, burning my eyes, so now I ALWAYS have a little spot I see (shhhh, had to hide that when i served in the military)

i thought thats what this topic was about, like focusing on minis would give you spots.

i love movies, but i\'ll take their anti-piracy stuff a little more seriously once angelina jolie doesn\'t make 30 million dollars for... standing there, and I gotta pay $20 to go see a movie, or pay $30 for a DVD of \"Battlefield Earth\" (not that i\'d buy THAT dvd... or that it costs $30, but you get my point)

My dad owned a sheetmetal shop and since I was knee high to a duck we knew to not look at the light. When when I was in my late teens I was using the heliarc. Hood down, weld, hood up and move work, hood down weld etc........ I set the piece up and forgot to put the hood down (this is back in the day before the Liquid Crystal lenses). I had the arc going for a second or two before it hit me what I was doing!! I was scared I was going to go blind! Best I can tell nothing happened - not even a welding flash, which I hear can be just a load of fun. Dodged the bullet that day.

Yeah being arc-flashed is pretty miserable. Imagine a wicked bad sunburn on your retina. Yeah that about sums it up.
