Do you use/have/ want an airbrush?

hi all, i am back from the long death of the family xmas. over crimbo, i aquired a copy of figure international, and in the contained painting articles it seems airbrushes appeared more than brushes. what i want to know is, where in lie the bonuses of airbrushing in mnin painting? do you use one? poll below for entermajiging

I have a very very basic one and I use it on every mini for the basecoat and first couple highlight and shading stages.

Looking to upgrade to a more controlled one now.

We just got a basic one - but I haven\'t tried it yet.
Need to work out exactly the right paint to water ratio!

I use mine regularly on armor figs. I\'m looking to expand my usage of my airbrush in \'09. I probably use it on average of every third model, and I just don\'t think their good for much more than basecoats on 28mm or smaller infantry style figs.

I have 3, all Iwatas.

If your serious, Id suggest you save your money and invest it in a quality set up and don\'t let your money burn a hole in your pocket and buy something cheap..like that turd GW came out with.. Sorry GW guys but that things good for maybe painting terrain..and thats it.

Best all around brush on the market is an Iwata HP-C Plus. I have that as my main work horse.

Dragon Forge Design: I have heard good things about the badger series, are these anygood? have you tried them? if so can you recommend them? (im mostly gonna paint larger pieces such as canvas paintings with it, but i still want a quality one!)

Iwata here too. The best I\'ve used, although Paasche are rated highly by those with more experience in this area than myself.

I agree with DF about cheap models, but would add that you\'ll be wasting your money if you think you can paint 28mm minis with even an expensive model. The only use for smaller scale figures is for basecoating and applying some directional lighting. All of which can be done with a spraycan! They come into their own on vehicles or much larger scale vinyl/resin kits.

Well my first airbrush was a badger.. and it crapped out quickly..always clogged and it was a 150 model. I thin invested in the Iwata..

I would compare them like this.

Badger is a 1978 Buick and Iwata is a Porsche.

As Spacemunkie said, if you think your going to paint details on a 28mm figure your in for a lot of frustration. If you want to apply ultra smooth thin primer and base coats..its the tool to use. You want to paint nice high end vehicles and kick ass cammo..its the tool to use.

I\'m currently using a Badger 150/\'78 Buick. It does what I ask it to, but maybe if I find I\'m using it more I will upgrade to the suggested model.

I picked the Badger up because it was on sale and there were lots of parts on the shelf as well. \'Cause I\'m an idiot and didn\'t pay attention to the fact that the sale was to blow all the airbrushes out of inventory including the parts I\'m back to internetting up parts anyway, so I think I may find myself upgraded quick anyway.

Flesh on larger minis. Playing with a dragon\'s wings. Armor. T-shirts. Kids (airbrushable makeup). My boat. Fire extenguisher (flame job - of course).

If it sits still and I\'ve got my guns out, it is very likely to get painted.

Use car winscreen wash in small amounts to thin down acrylics.

i\'ve got the iwata revolution, and i love it. its fantastic for basecoating and priming, you can whip out tanks quick as well. as said early dont bother with cheap junk like what gw put out. theres a less expensive brush then the gw one on tower hobbies that does the same thing. its worth investing in a good brush if you plan on using it for more then one or two projects.

Iwata ftw! I gotta figure out how to use it properly though. I pretty much bought the thing so I could stomach the thought of monsters, tanks and whatnot. I have a few Forgeworld kits that I would love to paint at some point, but without the hassle of the basecoat process

The next thing I plan to use my airbrush for is basecoating a SM battle company in Scab Red and maybe experiment with spraying on a Citadel Wash. It\'s supposed to work really well for the amount of time required.

I might use the airbrush to speed up the basecoating of my Hellcannon actually, I\'ll have to think about that

My dream would be to build/paint a squadron of Forgeworld Thunderbolt fighters. In American D-Day invasion markings. So good...
