Do you use/have/ want an airbrush?

I am considering one myself, for when i start my death korps army. Just dont really know which one to get.

Mainly it would be used for basecoating 28mm mini\'s and then tanks.

I rarely paint anything large scale. Though i do have a FW teclis waiting. If anyone could PM me a good reasonably priced one i would be grateful thanks.

airbrushes

I have two badger single actions, and a double action badger that sit at the bottom of my workbench drawer. I found them too picky about paint/thinner ratios in enamel.

They haven\'t been dug out in a while- I won an Iwata and compressor from FineScale Modeler last year. (woot!) I use it for priming/basecoating small figures. It\'s really impratical for detail work, but for dragons or other large pieces, it comes into it\'s own.

I also commission build 1/35 scale armor and HO & O scale trains, which is really the work it was designed for. And t-shirts and mailboxes, and auto hoods. There\'s also the facepainting and fingernails booth at the Shakespeare fest, or anything else that I can staple to the floor. Look out, cats!

If it\'s just for base coating then any cheap-o single action will work. I still don\'t reccomend an airbrush to anyone not intending to log a lot of hours on it. After the cost of the airbrush, compressor, parts etc. I think spray paint\'s wil be the more economic choice.

Of course if you want to do soft edge cam on vehicles and stuff then they\'re the cat\'s ass and there\'s no comparison. If that\'s the case I would consider saving and getting a good double action.

I don\'t \"have\" any airbrushes per se, good ol\' dad has about 3, and he usually uses them on 1:35 WWII armor. I\'m interested to use it on my minis, though.

Wow, if I could count how many air brushes I have got in this house I would run out of fingers to count with. My dad has been \"collecting\" airbrushes for a few years now but my brother, dad and I use about two (at the moment one due to the Trigger Iwata one being broken and in for repair) on regular.
Also my Dad uses \"his\" airbrush on painting WWII armour and more recently modern military armour.

Generally I will only use the airbrush for painting tanks, painting a grey primer coat on and sometimes putting basecoats on for figures.

As for me seeing somebody saying that they didn\'t know what mixtures are good for airbrushing, I can tell you what I generally use for spraying on most acrylics.
I use a 2:1:7 mixture .
The mixture is 2 paint (usually measures in a syringe), 1 water and about 7 - 10 drops of a liquid acrylic retarder. My dad picked this acylic retarder from an artshop (more like a giant artshop hence why the shop is called \"the artshed\") and the stuff works wonders. If anybody has ever airbrushed enamels onto WWII tanks (like I used to) the acrylic retarder makes acrylics spray on like them. It prevents the airbrush from being clogged ;)

Also another tip I figured out was is not the mix paints in the airbrush ;)

Cheers,
Daniel
