My GF is supportive of me painting but she thinks that the gaming is a waste of time.
My parents are very supportive on the following basis. As one gets older the more at risk one gets to having alzheimers. The best way to reduce ones chances of getting it is to keep your mind going by doing puzzles, math problems, etc. Anything that involves crititcal thinking. My parents are physicians and I asked them if painting counts as an exercise for your brain and my mom said, \"Hell yes!\". So they support my painting because it is actually healthy for you as well as creative.
So if anyone asks why you paint just say it will prevent you from getting alzheimers when you are older and then they will want to paint too.

My dad used to paint minis when I was still a kid, which sounds pretty normal now a days but wasn\'t in the mid 70\'s. I inherited my first minis from him. Unfortunatly he\'s way to competative and quit the hobby as soon as I learned to paint better then him. Now he shows a passing interest and has enough interest in the hobby to pick up the right Xmas gifts.
My mom\'s always been supportive, though I think if I turned to a life of crime she would still be just as supportive. That\'s just who she is.
My wife paints, infrequently, and games. It\'s one of the things that brought us together in the first place all those years ago. She\'s more into more artistic ventures, mostly involving decoupage and out of copywrite kids books now. She\'s the one that usually convinces me to pick up a brush again after my frequent breaks.
The Mother in law gets it in an artistic creative kind of way (she\'s into all kinds of artistic endevors and crafts). The father in law doesn\'t get it, but doesn\'t really get involved in much at all. If it\'s not running his shop or Golf he doesn\'t care much.
Brother in law thinks it\'s a waste of time and that I should get off my ass and jog or play sports or something, or at least work on getting a better job. Now he\'s a Jock Engineer who Jet sets around the world programming robots, way out of my league so I don\'t let his opinion affect me much.
Sister In Law - likes gaming and can apreciate the skill involved, though I don\'t think she has painted anything herself. She is also into artsy stuff, mainly photography and sculpting.
That\'s pretty much it for immediate family.

She\'ll always ask when birthday or Xmas come if there\'s any minis I want.
My kids used to paint/game but have moved on; but usually buy me minis as presents.
I guess at my age it\'s \'this will keep him quiet\'.

My mom and step-dad are very supportive, and actually think it\'s a very creative way to spend time.
My brother couldn\'t care less about my hobby.
My girlfriend is sort of supportive, but isn\'t in to it, she understands that I enjoy it, but it isn\'t for her.
My biological father....well I don\'t know, he doesn\'t know anything about my hobbies, since I turned 2....

My first wife tolerated it just.
My second wife is much more supportive, she calls them my toy dolls and thinks im a sad sad geek and hates me doing my hobby before she has gone to bed. But despite that she is brilliant, she even took my geeky colour coded shopping list off me at the last salute and took me to the correct stalls to make sure I bought all of it.
She will be with me at the next Salute and GdSpain. I refuse to subject her to GDUK though.

My wife likes it when I sell stuff. Other than that she says \'thats nice\' alot!
My 2 year old loves them, but he is a bit rough with fragile minis! He like mounted stuff best.
My wife thinks I am a nerd but when I gave her the choice of me being nerdy indoors and painting my toy soldiers or being a not a nerd and drinking my money in the bar with my mates and getting pie-eyed every weekend she opted for the nerd the rest of my family just accept it, I guess they have just got used to it.

The ex takes credit for having gotten me into minis in the first place (then took half the minis). My son loves to watch me work, so does my friend Wen. The rest of the family thinks I\'m nuts but likes that I\'m creative. They just shake their heads a lot. The boyfriend is a paint, albeit a slow one.

girlfriends usually call my minis \"dolls\", and get miffed if i don\'t pay enough attention to \'em...they get really mad when i don\'t spend the night, and instead go home to work...it is work after all, and i can only slack off for so long before the customers get pissed off...
i think the fam was waitin\' for me to get a real job, but have since come to accept that money can be made from minis, and since i don\'t ask \'em for loans, they can\'t say shit!!!

Parents will always think that anything you are doing that is not part of some sort of business money making use of your time, you are wasting your time. My parents are very polite and say how nice and look over them but that’s about it.
My first wife thought it was a waste of time and money and every time a new miniature showed up in the house you would have thought I had stuck her in the back with a knife. That is why I stopped for a while because the aggravation was too much.
My wonderful loving current wife thinks they are great and anything that makes me happy is a good thing.
What you have to ask yourself is who are you painting for? Do it because you love the challenge and really enjoy painting. That’s why I am back. Enjoy yourself.

Well, Dad is Dauber22 on here, so he takes it pretty well. I have no idea what mom thinks of it, other than the few comments about how impressed she is that I\'m able to paint on such small scales, though that was a lot of my earlier stuff, which is nothing compared to now. My Bro showed some interest a while ago in Bloodbowl, and seems as impressed as mom (though I\'m equally impressed with some of the things he can draw up).
All in all, it\'s pretty well accepted, with the exception that my minis tend to end up everywhere as I switch or move painting/converting stations. Then again it\'s always been cheaper than my brothers sport/hobby/job of baseball.

Some of the comments really remind me that having creative hobbies at all is still seen as pretty unacceptable for the majority of people. I think it\'s some kind of protestant work ethic or something...
My brother is into Flames of War so he \"gets it\". My dad appreciates tinkering/hobby things so he seems to like it that his sons are that way too. My girlfriend... well she couldn\'t care less if I paint minis or not, and she doesn\'t hide the fact. But at least she doesn\'t give me a hard time about it. I do wish that she could at least bring herself to say more than \"that\'s nice dear\" *immediately stop looking*, but I figure I\'m not doing it for her approval.

She and I struck a deal, ONE cabinet in the living room, one in the study. Seems fair to me.
Oh, the GF doesn\'t KNOW about every mini I buy. She knows I have a bunch of unpainted, and I doubt she\'ll ever buy me any as a gift, but I\'m an adult and I don\'t need her permission to spend a few dollars, nor will I ever.

My wife sometimes acts as if mini painting is my \'mistress\' and is robbing her of attention, she says its great that I have a hobby, but doesn\'t really \'get\' it I don\'t think, but then, I dont \'get\' buying loads of pairs of shoes, so I guess were sort of even.
She did come to GDUK though and thought that the mini\'s in the cabinets were really good (she even took loads of pics of them), but I had to virtually force her to go in the first place (she actually asked if she could come up on the coach, then go off shopping in Birmingham while I was at GD).
Nigel - I thought you were the toughest, sturdiest, hardiest mini pointer out there mate.... maybe you should change your user name on here to \'fluffy bunny\' or something similar.
I have always secretly wished that I had met someone who shared the hobby though, would be really cool, not to have to battle the strife to bargain for painting time.
