Does anybody paint anymore?

I dunno what to tell ya.

My last big hoorah was GDLA. I have done next to nothing since then worth posting. Mostly some commision work to wargame standard and some oddball projects.

In of themselves they are nice figures, but not so good I think that thye will do anything to help my overall standing.

In any event, I like seeing some of the sculpts, but much like the painting, there are good ones, and there are some really bad ones.

Usually for top painting I check the top 50 painters. Fewer sculpts and more painting.

I paint when I have the time, but I doubt I\'m in the inspiration league. Most of my minis don\'t qualify for Jahmini\'s viewing level.

Re sculpts: I usually have a go at voting on them. Now I\'ve done a little sculpting of my own, I\'m a bit better equipped to tell what\'s what. In truth, I have a much harder time with conversions because often I\'m not familiar with the originals. I\'m looking at you, Space Marines!

I now have a goal! Reach the point where ONE of my minis gets voted on by Jahmini! There is a Santa! lol

Please for the love of God, and this is to all the painters on this site be you ranked 6000 or number one, don\'t feel bad laying out the crit\'s on mini\'s!

I came here as about a 5.5-6.0 painter. Now I\'m a 6.8ish painter and the ONLY way we get better is by hearing good advice and crits from people. For some it may be speaking from their own experience and how they were able to achieve their results of 7 and up, from others it may just be them passing along general advice like color schemes, or tips they\'ve heard about themselves.

I\'ll take my models getting bashed around on the net by strangers ANY day, please feel free to do so!

In the short months I\'ve been here I\'ve noticed that most of the crit\'s issued are by the same group of people. Nothing wrong there at all and I have gotten some absolute dynamite advice and poitners from this group of people. I would love to see that group double or triple in size so people who do post submissions and WIP get advice from a much bigger demographic.

Jah, if you can find it in your heart please take a little time to pass on some of your knowledge of the hobby to people like myself. The kind words and tips I\'ve recieved at CMON have brought new energy into the hobby for me and it has spilled over into my circle of painting friends in the city. The words you think might come of as harsh might actually inspire someone to look a the hobby in a whole new light as it did me.

@amazon warrior: i\'ve seen your minis, and they\'re worth a look...i don\'t believe that i\'ve ever felt moved enough to vote or comment...appreciation and inspiration are two different things...i totally appreciate your presence on the forums...

@pegazus: keep workin\' at it, maybe santa will put a vote in your stocking...

@scott: i just can\'t bring myself to tell someone that i think their mini is crap...

the main advice that i could give for painters is to do the exact opposite of what i say...
i have the most unorthodox approach to paintin\'...i always start from black and build from darkest to lightest, with no glazes, inks, drybrushin\', and a minimum of mixin\'...pure layerin\', strong colours, and simple techniques...
i guarantee that 9 out of 10 times, any advice that i give would be contradicted by the top painters here, but i get paid, published, displayed, and win awards...
i stand behind my style, but don\'t reccomend it to anyone who aspires to be a top painter...

I do agree with the OP with regards to the conversions thing in particular. I\'m not particularly au fait with either the bits from the miniatures or the fluff to go with it, so never know what to vote on them. It would be nice to be able to exclude those as they dont fit in any slot of their own.

Your figs are great, you\'re an accomplished painter, and you\'re not a jerk so I don\'t think you\'d evert just comment to someone \"Your fig looks like crap\".

Nothing wrong with your own style, you do well with it and I\'d like to hear more from you on how you do things your ways. The WIP\'s, comments etc are what people like myself come here for and I still encourage you strongly to take some time to critique some figs.

And I personally ask you to go ahead and be brutal and bluntly honest if you\'re ever inclined to vote and comment on my work.

Wow, an entirely hollow, backhanded compliment. Thanks. I think. Since I believe that you get back what you give out, I\'m sure you\'ll understand if I take the same approach to your submissions henceforth.

I have to say that your reply to pegazus has made me shift you several rungs up the \"arrogance\" ladder in my head. Since when did you become the last word in mini painting? I don\'t remember receiving the memo. Although if you can\'t say anything more constructive that \"Your mini is crap!\", perhaps it\'s just as well that you don\'t choose to mingle with us commoners.

This is all a great pity. Until this thread, I mentally had you down as one of the good guys. I\'m sorry that my image of you has been altered so radically.

I believe that even a novice painter can have a great idea, but get into trouble with the execution, which is why I try to vote on everything I see and to look at what has been attempted and whether it\'s a cool idea. There\'s something to be learnt from even a low-scoring mini, and a few words of encouragement can go a long way. Not everyone here is a professional painter who gets time to paint every day and gets paid for their work and wins awards and such.

Anyway, I think I see what he meant. It\'s easier to comment to painters that are about the same level as us. As a (Apparently) crappy painter I find it easier to comment on equaly (So-called) crappy minis, cause I can relate to them and the same things I\'ve been through recently. I can hardly comment on very good minis beside saying: \"Man! That\'s great! I wish I could paint...\" and so much for something really craptastic ( Let\'s say 3-4) unless it\'s a beginner on the forum directly asking for pointers.
But it\'s important that once in a while someone takes the time to comment, it really helps. I started here with a (well deserved) 3.2 and now I can almost paint beyond JahMinis threshold of acceptance, and I owe it largely to all the help I got here, no matter how harsh the comments were.

Back on the original topic, sorry I brought this up, things seem to be back the way I like them, looks of great new stuff almost daily, and I feel as inspired as can be

Some people disagree with my method, but the highest vote a non-painted mini ever gets from me is a 4 because it is not tabletop quality.

The reason for this is, even though skillfully sculpted as many of them may be, anyone can glue or assemble a mini and plunk it down on a table.

I prefer to vote on painted minis myself, but sadly that has not been the norm of most I have seen lately as it seems many are trying to break into the business of sculpting. It isn\'t bad, but I like to paint minis not sculpt them myself, so any sculpt is not that interesting to inspire me to paint if i only see green or brown stuff.

maybe a new switch needs to be added to the minis that is required as a radio button when submitting that asks, painted or unpainted, that will allow people to sort out if they choose those things not painted.

Nym, I think is the person, does excellent sculpts, and many painted one I have rated 8-10.

Greens are just too hard to see all the detail unless you have it in your hand and just look like unfinished WIPs in my tastes, thus my votes on them reflect their unfinished state.

yes, i\'m a bit arrogant...yes, i have an ego...i\'m also my own worst critic...i\'m not happy with anything that i\'ve ever painted...luck, more than skill, landed me in the industry...

i still try to improve everyday, but not through other people\'s advice, just a lot of practice, and hard work...a lot of the minis i\'ve painted in the last 5 years have not been scheduled for release \'til 6 months down the road, and i couldn\'t just show \'em \'round the forums without loosin\' my job...so i have to depend on my own idea of cool...some people dig it, some people don\'t...
what people see as a cool mini is such a subjective thing anyway...

i\'m not tryin\' to impose a criteria for cool here...i just said what inspires me...some people like metal, and some people like rap...is one cooler that the other??? that\'s up to the listener...some people would say that they\'re both absolute crap...
some people are offended by nudity, and some people aren\'t...

the answer is yes, some of us have to paint daily, and it sucks...when paintin\' is a job, and each piece has to be as good as the last, i need to see some great paintjobs for the inspiration to put in that last bit of extra effort, especially when burnt-out sets in...

it\'s only recently that i\'ve tried to join in on the votin\' side of things here, and i find that i don\'t have time to vote much...i browse, i participate in the forum, and then i get back to paintin\'---so i can eat tomorrow!!!
