Does anyone else do this?

I do talk to myself, and quite frequently, answer back in different voices. lol

No, you\'re certainly not alone in this. I\'ve been known to have fairly lengthy discussions. Once or twice, they\'ve turned into rather heated debates, and once, sadly, a brief bout of fisticuffs erupted.

In all seriouslness, though, folks... I know many of us shape our brushes in our mouths, etc. I do it myself. I just want to remind everyone that EVERY kind of paint is loaded with numerous and various noxious and toxic substances. I know this probably won\'t change any one\'s habits, but we ought to do it knowingly.

\"weird\" things I do:

1) I wear boxers and once they wear out I cut off the elastic band and do a vertical cut along the seams. (Then I take\'em off and ...) From old clothes one can make pretty good rags. I have old t-shirts cut at the seam and even socks sliced up the middle and flayed. So the brush goes from paint to fig to water to rag then to mouth for point restoration.

Yes, all have been washed prior to their transformation.

2) I make appropriate noises (not accurate necessarily) for the setting of whatever I\'m painting: blades swinging and plunging into wet flesh or clanging swords for fantasy figs, the sounds of arrows in flight and hitting targets for bowmen, musket bangs with ricochets for nearly everything else.

3) I only paint weekend mornings. (In my household, there is a strong corelation between painting and coffee drinking and otherwise I just don\'t have time before work during the week to paint though)

4) Prime in black ... this is controversial rather than weird

using a syringe to transfer water? why din i think of that! been using a straw to transfer water, but its note too accurate...:D

really love these lil posts cos sometimes people talk about these lil things that would make life so much easier.

like, every time i go to Spinelli\'s i steal their lil coffee stirrers to use to mix my paint. the coffee stirrers/ice cream sticks/tongue depressers are about the right shape and curve to swish stubborn GW paint against the sides of my cheap plastic palette.

and yeah, i do the erasor-brush thing too. it was a brush that i really used to love until the hairs developed a centre parting... still good for getting runaway paint out of panels tho!

is there any way of rehabilitating this kinda brush btw?

I \"test\" the point of my brush and how much paint is loaded by painting a line on the thumb of the hand holding the model. Once, during a long session using Humbrol paints (enamels) this caused such a build up that it caused a burn when pulled off.

A really bad habit is not using anything to hold the mini while painting (apart from my hand)- resulting in numerous touch ups where the paint has been worn off.

As far as talking to myself is concerned this consists mainly of swearing when i\'ve made a mistake or rubbed something off:rolleyes:

Wow, got something rolling...

It\'s cool seeing other people\'s tips and tricks.

I don\'t use a siringe for clean water, but I have dropper bottles for water and magic wash. You know, brown glass bottles with little eye droppers in them. I got them at the Health Food store. Someone else mentioned using old Visine bottles for this, and I just kind of went \"Doh! Wish I\'d thought of that!\"

I used to have multiple brush rinsing containters, but my cats like to drink out of my brush water. Not that it bothers me, but one of the cats paws everything when he drinks, so paints, brushes, unpainted minis, etc., go flying if he\'s drinking from my cups. So I use a one big, coverd brush tank to keep him off the table when I\'m not there.

Interesting thing about the brush tank - if you let the water sit, the pigment will settle out, and the water is clean again. Strange, but true.

My husband is in the Navy, and goes through a lot of cotton t-shirts. They get stained at the neck, and are no longer \"good\" for work. I cut these up for rags. Haven\'t tried socks, but since I have lots of \"odd socks\", maybe I should.

I have on of those flip-top GW empty paint pots with Plaid brush cleaner in it. It\'s really more of a solvent than brush cleaner. I\'ll soak brushes in the stuff if they are grungy, then work the paint out of the bristles. Then I apply Pink Soap (another brush cleaner/conditioner) and shape the bristles to restore the point of the brush.

Of course, it\'s my cheapy brushes that get this treatment. I take better care of the WNS7 and Vallejo brushes.

I never shape a brush in my mouth. I use cloth or paper towel.

When I ship my minis, I make a little box for them and custom-cut pieces of cheap sponge to fit the mini. That way, the owner has a customized box, like the ones they use for Lladro\'s, to hold the mini. I\'ve never had a mini shipped this way arrive broken.

I have all my stuff in a tool box (minus the ott light and clamp magnifyer) so could go anywhere, but realized I could never get anything done with all that lot so I now have a mini, porta-painter box. It contains a pallet, 5-6 paints, 3 brushes, an x-acto knife, a cup, and a handfull of minis. I can take this with me anywhere I go and get an hour or two of painting in on the fly without fretting over which shade of yellow is right.

I used to wear an old Kodak apron when painting but I accidentally left it at the game shop one day.

I don\'t bother to cut up my rags. In fact, some times I don\'t bother to take them off. I put on a t-shirt one day only to discover it had a hole in it. As I wasn\'t going anywhere I kept it on thinking I\'d later rag it. When I was painting, I just began cleaning the brush on my shirt. Amazing how convenient it was!

Usually I use an old t-shirt until it has no paint-free spots, then turn it inside out and voila!, a completely clean rag!

I use an eye dropper for transfering water, paint, extender, anything that I need to mix a color. They are really cheap (like 2 bucks for 3) and you can get them at ANY drugstore.

I use the brush with water to clean the affected area routine.

Couple of other little things I do, just to add to the list -

1. Having stolen Saxonangels popsicle mold idea for a water container, I couldnt find a popsicle mold at my local Wally World, so I bought an ice tray - works just fine, and I have several different waters to work with.

2. Being addicted to Altoids, and also coming from a long line of pack rats thus hating to throw useful items away, I use the tins for organizing my bitz, and for individual mini transport if the figure is small enough - you put several layers of paper towel or rag in the tin and viola! you have an instant mini transport device.

And like many others on this thread, I use my mouth to shape the brush - after washing and initial shaping via rag.

Vince there had a great idea from some thread long ago about using distilled water intead of tap water for thinning paints. It\'s an idea I promptly put into practice .. who knows what minerals or flouride and crap I\'d been using to thin my paints. I use the squeeze bottle from Woodland Scenics and put a blast of distilled into each tin if it starts thickening up.

What does carbonated water like say seltzer (no stchnine or sodium) do to a mix ... anything?

Actually, Vince has been full of good ideas - I also avoid flourescent lamps like the plague as it considerably speeds up the fading process ... I\'ll let him explain the science of it all ....

Does anyone here paint on their thumb. I have a tendency to hold a model with my left hand and paint with my right. More often than not my left thumb becomes my mixing pallet and area where I get rid of excess paint. Anyone else have this bad habit?

*raises hand* horribly guilty. Although it\'s not just paint that my thumb suffers from. An awful lot of modelling knife cuts and missing skin from trying to pull my thumb off of stuff i\'ve superglued it to..

But I find it handy to use to get rid of excess paint from the brush just before you apply it to the mini you\'re working on.

Mixing paint brush by brush

It wasn\'t metioned in this thread, but someone talked about mixing paint brush by brush. Put several colors on your pallet and mix as you go.

I was doing this yesterday. The cool thing about it is it is very fast. Make a couple of strokes to load your brush with the right color, paint, go back, do it again - seems to go much faster than mixing, then painting, etc. And the colors seem to look more \"natural\". What do the rest of you guys think?

YOu know, it\'s funny. I was thinking about this when I read it before. As a watercolorist, I do this all the time, but have never even tried it while painting minis! ??? Don\'t know why. I\'ll have to try it. I know in watercolors it does make the colors look more natural and lively.

Got another one - we finished a squeeze bottle of Mustard the other day, and after running it through the dishwasher I\'m using it as a container for water to thin paints - works great and is fairly controlable.

I was looking at one of those airplane magazines (U know, the ones with the gadgets, that you think are cool when your on the plane, but think otherwise on the ground) a while back, and I remember seeing a neat gadget that would make an awsome paintwater holder.

It\'s a water dish for pets that constantly cycles the water through a filter, and spits it back out as a kind of pet water fountain. The way I was thinking was that it keeps your paint water clean, and works as one of those zen mini waterfalls to stop you from throwing a mini at the wall when you end up dropping it in black paint after finishing a 5 hr paint job (at 2 am) that you now realize can\'t be re-tried because your out of the right colors!:flame:

Ahem. Well that\'s my idea, now if you excuse me I need to peel my ork warboss of my bedroom wall.

I keep a small bottle of acetone with my paints for superglue mishaps. It instantly removes the glue without harming your skin.
