Doing a static grass base well?

I\'m wondering if anyone has good tips for a base with patches of static grass? Looking more for pro display standard than simple rank and file.

From what I\'ve picked up so far from experimenting is the grass will look thin just applied over a painted brown dirt base, so to apply the grass twice, or paint the surface before the grass is applied with a greenish brown color first.

Also hang the base upside down seconds after applying, as you seem to get more blades standing upright once it\'s dry.

I havent´t ried them myself, but you could try one of the plastic applicator bottles which should charge the static grass with static electricity.

Or if you´re loaded then get:

(the plastic bottle should do the same - in theory at least...)

bloody hell thats a lot of money for some grass tufts, it makes these look cheap!

basically the best ways that i have heard are:
keep the grass in a zip-lock bag and shake before using, this charges it with static
use superglue to hold it on the base
leave to dry upside down
dry brush with appropriate colour

My method of doing it is to brush on a bit of glue on the base then, using tweezers pinch out a bit of the static grass from a tupperware that\'s been shaken up and apply it into the glue in a clump. Then I take an old brush and stab the roots of the grass deeper into the glue and use a clayshaper (or other pointy tool) to coerce the grass to stand upright as the glue dries.

I don\'t blow on it to remove the loose grass at that point since I don\'t want to dislodge the grass that\'s being glued down. I just brush away any loose pieces with a soft brush. Then as it\'s drying I check up on it to make sure the grass is doing well and not limping down or anything. Once it\'s set up I\'ll drybrush whith whatever color I feel it needs, or even paint the whole bit of grass brown or something then drybrush it lighter to make it look dead if needs be.

That\'s for small mini bases though, for larger terrain and the like I\'ll just sprinkle the grass down over glue after shaking it up and hope it mostly lands upright. For larger pieces I like the woodland scenics style foliage though and don\'t use the static grass much.

I second the grass tufts .. Silfor , noch original all are good. They make application of neat and natural looking clumps to be done easily.

siflor tufts, static grass to extend the patches.
drab green wash, brown earthy wash then khaki dry brush.
jobs a good one.

just don\'t buy from international models, they are a bloody rip off and crush the siflor, so it\'s knackered by the time you get it.

go to jed instead http://www.barrule.com/Workshop/products.html

If you only want patches/ tufts of grass these work very well. They are relatively expensive but you get a lot on sheet and they go quite a long way.

I\'ve used them on a number of my models
such as this one.

That\'s a fine lookin\' marine there.
