Double Twist Barbed Wire

very effective. have been planning to do it myself some time but i haven\'t pulled my finger out. how did you get the wire to twist uniformly? every time i do it, it\'s really tight at one end and loose at the other

Why do people seem to want to strip wire so often? Just seems like a whole lot of extra work.
You can get metal wires with no plastic coatings (usually steel or galvanized metal, I\'d avoid the brass, copper and colour covered varieties) for super cheap at the craft stores and craft sections of larger stores (usually in the jewellery making and floral sections). It\'s about $2-3 for a little spool that has a huge length of wire, hundreds of feet, at Michaels and Walmart, both in the floral sections. At the hardware/home stores or in that section of the larger Walmart, Sears, etc type places. A lot of the sizes typically available at the auto/home/hardware stores is too large for this, at least around here, the smallest gauge is about 18. It\'s about $4-6 for a lengthy roll, several meters, at Home Depot and Rona.
I\'d think that the wires above are about 24 to 26 gauge, anything from 20-30 gauge would probably work for the 28-32mm scale.

??? Because you have the time and not the money?
Why do people always want to throw money at something that could be done with a little bit of effort and work for no money?
Hell why, even make barbed wire, why not just buy the stuff from Forgeworld.
I wish people would stop worshipping money, and try doing things for themselves.
I have many bad cat5 cables and EIDE cables, etc. Why buy wire when I can use what I have rather than throw away perfectly good wire just to buy some that I don\'t have to remove the sheathing of.
Not to mention that wild hair up your butt making you awake at 2am and not wanting to go to the store, but make something and just look for things around the house to work with.
Seems that is an odd thing said by a few people around here lately. Spend more money for this or that, as the answer for anything. ???
I like this and was trying to make some razor wire myself, and still wondering how you did it double braided wire? Are you twisting both around the main wire at the same time in the same direction or what?
All I ever got was two ends from a single coil for bards.

I\'m wrapping two wires at the same time, just held together not braided

I\'m writing an article for this so for now here\'s a pic of the general set-up
I have 2 nails pushed into pre-drilled holes, 500mm apart. This shows the pre-twisted wire stretched tightly between them, with a few barbs started at the left hand end near the roll of wire

Bit of mucking around though, I prefer to use Firefox, but it wouldn\'t copy and paste, I had to use IE, then that started playing up when i was inserting the pics, anyway, got there in the end

You might want to look at where you want page breaks.

Hi Mick, sorry to come in on this late but only just saw the thread. I think you might be missing one of the simple tricks from the established method for making miniature barbed wire, to do with wrapping the barbs - are you doing them individually?
This is for a slightly different type of wire but you can do the barbs in one long run, which loops over and under. Then you clip off the hoops to leave the barbed ends.
I knew I\'d seen a pic of this basic thing recently and it shows what I mean much better than words:

One thing I like to make sure to do is to clip off the wire at a sharp angle, instead of at 90°. It\'s only a small thing (literally!) but I think it makes a big difference if you view the wire closely.

P.S. One last old tip from Military Modelling magazine is if you use fuse wire to just heat with a candle flame and the tinning \'solders\' each barb in place, so no need to mess with any glue.
