As a kid (6ish) I had a particularly nasty dream. I encountered this monster in a mist filled library. I shudder to think about this dream, I almost wet myself as a kid.
The best way that I could describe the monster is that it had the lower body of Shagoth all black and shinney, more slug like though. With the upper body of a very large human almost giant, and the head of a vampire with long flowing white hair. BIG glowing red eyes. Its mouth was extremly elongated almost like it could bite your head off. Its hands were long and skinny with fingers ending in blood stained claws. It stood about 10 feet tall and was as wide a a typical library isleway.
I shudder to remember this dream. This monster killed a friend in my dream thats why its claws were stained.

Well, I had a dream not a bout a monster per se, but still it was very scary to think about it.. Basically, me and my family were trapped in the house, and it was black outside because there was this swarm coming through.. A swarm of what looked like one foot scorpions with big, black wings! One got into the house and it was about to get my dad, when I lunged at it and another got me from behind.. then I woke up. I can\'t even imagine trying to survive a swarm of those buggers!

When I was about 8 I had a dream about a Piratey smuggling cove and when we got there in a boat there were pig headed smugglers???It was the noise they made that scared me though,like wild pigs uuughhlollolI couldn\'t get back to sleep after!

I have a doozy! I started having this nightmare when I was about 8 and have had it regularly ever since.
I am being chased through a rambling derelict house which is collapsing around me, by some she-monster resembling Kathy Bates in her \'Misery\' role but much bigger and uglier, who is trying to bash me to death with a push-chair which she is holding over her head like a cudgel...
I know, I know...I am a psychologist after all, I recognise all the implications..

Unfortunately all of my scarey dreams contain very mundane monsters, usually undead versions of people I know. Ghosts, zombies...boring stuff. Frightening enough in the dream, but nothing worth making a mini out of. I must use up all of my imagination during my RPG sessions and don\'t leave anything for my subconscious

I think the thing that did me in pretty bad as a kid as that movie \'Dark Crystal\' or whatever it was. The vulture things.
Still give me the creeps and my dad bought the movie for my kids thinking it was muppets and all. I promptly told him to take it back - none of that in my house even 20 years later ..

No but he did kind of look like Krusty the Clown...
That\'s funny -- that movie is on sale for like 2 dollars in the local DVD superstore right now. I was thinking about buying it for my 10- and 6-year old.
It was in release in theatres at a time when I worked in a movie theater in New Jersey -- I must\'ve seen it forty times and was completely enthralled by the visual and conceptual imagery in the film.
Never occurred to me that children might see the movies with other eyes. I think I\'ll buy it anyways (haven\'t seen it in the 22-23 years since) but won\'t show it to my kids.

The question reminds me of something that happened in a Floyd comic. In there the world is invaded by creatures from another dimension that take on shape by digging into people minds and find what they fear. There was a creature in an elevator that had several long arms and tickled me. I hate being tickled. It was a weird one. There was a witch-type monster as well before that, but it moved around the ceiling and walls. Freaky as feck.
Also used to have dreams the teddies at the end of my bed started tickling my feet and had sharp teeth.

As I child I had this terrible nightmare about an eyeless santa. Our santa had a mask that had a really freaky smile and you couldn\'t quite see the eyes.. in the dream it was pitchblack holes. he was numb too..! It all sorted out nicely though, one dream my father arrived before santa.. and it turned out it was just one of his working pals. never had that nightmare again after that.
and for Swedish people.. the santas name was Pelle.. and he kept repeating it. lol scary name huh? (You could call a cute bunny or puppy Pelle, in swedish..)
But never ever make a sculpt of him.

Yeah, being just months off of being 30, you would think I would be well and truly over it. I\'m sure I could sit through it these days, but you know ... got no desire.
That said, yeah, I \'personally\' would show it to a kid, but then again, my kids have some bloody video games and have seen some odd shit on TV and I\'m sure it wouldn\'t faze them too much.
Although, things that are more \'kiddish\' and \'cute\' that turn out to be scary in a movie might tend to make more of an impact instead of say, a guy with a hatchet and chainsaw. Yeah, that\'s a guy with a bloody chainsaw but THAT is KERMIT killing FOZZIE!!
