Dreams of the stranger kind

I dreamt last night I was fighting King Kong with a pair of shears. He was after my bike. I remember impaling him on the shears, but he wouldn\'t die. In the end another King Kong came along (with long blond hair) and they disappeared due to my dad unloading the movie from the video recorder. I then explained that we\'d missed the ending, but I woke up straight after. How queer!

Never eat a curry 2 hours before bed :D

Now THAT, depends on how big the shears are!! ;) Incidentally, was the blonde King kong blonde all over (Blonde fur?) or was it just on the head...??

(Cos he\'s worth it - or maybe he\'s born with it) he he :)

Why not? I appreciate my dreams, the stranger the better. During my weed smokin\' years (mid nineties - 2000) I never used to dream at all, or at least I didn\'t ever remember them.

The only dream that I haven\'t much cared for over the past few years was one in which I attended the funeral of my father (he\'s still living btw), reached into his coffin, and took a gold ring from his finger. That disturbed me a little, and surely signifies something to Freudians.

I also had a dream about King Kong when I was young. He atatcked my home, I tried to hide in the wardrobe but it was full of my friends and I couln\'t get in properly. He saw me and picked me up. I don\'t remember the ending though.

So what do you all think about the science of dreams and such. Do they have any meaning or significance?

Have you had dreams that predicted something?

I had a dream the other night that I could call my brothers cell phone using a really big gum ball. I have absolutely no idea what that could mean.

Well, dreams do have an important physiologic role. They only occur during REM sleep, which is only one of several stages of sleep. If you don\'t get enough REM sleep, you don\'t function well.

As far as the significance of dream content, I think that is anyone\'s guess. I personally think it is your mind just taking little bits of information stored in various parts of the brain and stringing them together semi-randomly. The brain\'s job is to try to make sense of the environment, so that is why most dreams have some sort of \"plot\", although often bizarre. Some dreams clearly have some association with your current state of mind - if you are stressed, you may have the \"late for school/work\" dream or the \"at school/work in your underwear only\" dream.

Interesting stuff.

Plus if you wake up during REM you will remember the dreams vividly with alot more detail, REM usually occurs every 1 and a half hours if im correct? With about 4 REM\'s being the average per sleep? (correct me if im wrong)

If you wake up during REM, you should have turned your stereo off a couple of hours ago.
Sorry, Dragonsreach said I could tell terrible jokes.:]

@matty1001 - 90 minutes is the usual duration of the total sleep cycle, and REM is only a small part of it (don\'t recall the typical number of minutes in REM, sorry).

So if you sleep 6-8 hours in a typical night you probably have at least 3 or 4 different dream sessions per night.

I don\'t know the stats on this, but I suspect when one awakens during a dream, they are more likely to remember the details - think of nightmares. Similarly, I suspect most of the dreams people remember are the ones closer to morning (or whenever they normally wake)

There are some other really fascinating sleep-related phenomena that occur - sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations to name a few.

Going into R.E.M. sleep is vital for the brain, it is when you are in your deepest unconcious state. This is also the most dangerous time for sleep as the brain goes so deep into itself you may never wake up.

If you slept without going into R.E.M. state you will eventually go insane, as the brain has not shut down properly, you will start to hallucinate and eventually turn into this

Hmm...

...school. Normal clothes instead of uniform. Washing machines. Cyclops. Ikea. Mick\'s dad attacking a scaly three-eyed man.

Very vivid, that one lol
