Dullcote: Can there be only one?

Mosch has stated in one thread that the Dullcote products from Testor and the Italian company Model Master are one and the same. The same impression was given from the shop where I bought my Model Master Dullcote.

The question remains in my mind: are these two one and the same product? ??????:D

As far as i know Model Master\'s and testors are the same thing. In fact the Testors web site shows Model masters to be one of their products. Model Masters is Testors acrylics line of paint. The dullcote is the same, just with the Model Masters label.

I\'ve been using a model master one called \'lacquer overcoat - lustreless (flat)\', because I couldn\'t find any testor\'s dullcote here in sydney. It works well, it\'s very flat, although I can\'t compare it to dullcote as I\'ve never tried it.

Hobbyco sell Testors dullcote in Oz, but their supply seems a bit hit or miss. They also sell the Humbrol matt varnish spray, which works great as well and they tend to always have it in stock.

Testors Dullcoat

I was just out at the Victorian Hobby Centre this morning checking out there cool range of products.

They stock Testors Dullcoat and Testors Glosscoat both in the spray can and in the paint on (airbrush on) lacquer form. You can find them at: 21A Swanston Street, Melbourne 3000. Ph: (03) 9650 4817
e-mail: vichobbycentre@bigpond.com.au

Unfortunately for me, I\'ve been told that it wouldn\'t be wise to fly with a can of testors dullcoat in my luggage. Darn!! I head back to Taiwan tomorrow dullcoat less. I could probably take a bottle of the paint on testors dullcaot but I\'m a little dubious as to whether it\'ll be as good as the spray can version.

If anyone knows anything about the paint on (airbrush on) version I\'d really appreciate some advice.

Good luck gentlemen!

I\'ve been using the paint -on Model Masters Dullcote, works quite well unthinned -- thin coat is dead flat, too thick a coat seems though to give a more satiny finish.

laurence, you should definitely pick up a bottle of the brush-on Dullcote.

Testors Dullcoat...

Okay marineboy, I\'ll buy a bottle of the stuff tomorrow. The very helpful d00d at the Vic Hobby Centre said he\'d successfully applied the stuff to one of his acrylic painted models in the past using an airbrush. He also advised me not to mix it with anything. I\'ll give the stuff a go...

@ Ogrebane, I\'m just going to pass on the advice that I was given at the hobby centre earlier on today. He said to check on line for testors distributers in your city or local area. If you have no luck with that I advise you either visit or contact : Wargames Warehouse out in Stafford, Qld. If they don\'t have it they can probably get it for you. By memory, Wargames Warehouse is the largest stockest of miniatures this side of the southern hemisphere. Heaven really!

Success to ya!

Laurence, Model Master also makes a thinner for the Dullcote, called airbrush thinner, good for cleaning brushes used with Dullcote.

The very knowledgeable matron at the local model shop recommended it for said purpose and warned against using terpentine. The airbrush thinner has only a faint smell (definite advantage in an apartment with wife and kids). Water doesn\'t work for cleaning, neither does saliva (yeah, I\'m a brushlicker!:D)

Good luck!

Ogrebane, can\'t help you out with spray, but I can send you a pot of brush-on Model Master Dullcote, if you wish.

I ran out of my dullcote recently ( slight spillage, upset wife, nasty scene blah blah blah ) anyway i have been trying humbrol matt cote brush on. I have found that as long as I stir it vigorously it give an excellent matt finish.
Its easier to get hold of aswell.
:D

Is there the implication that Testor\'s Dullcote from a bottle can be used in an airbrush? ??? I can easily get hold of that stuff, but not the spray. Hmmmmm... :D

From what I\'ve been told it\'s okay to apply the bottled version of Testors Dullcoat using an airbrush. From what I can tell, the bottled version is exactly the same as the spraycan version only without aerosol.

Mmmm... Floquil makes a wonderful one! Someone sent me a can (thank you, you know who you are!) and I am totally hooked and converted. I get a much more consistant flat from it than I EVER did from Dullcoat, so much so that the Dullcoat got relegated to the eight year old\'s figures.
