A lot of people have been bitching about how expensive GW stuff is . . here\'s what looks like a promising alternative to WFB. A challenge: - see if you disgruntled EX wahammer players can help Westwind be a real competitor and check out their stuff . . . neat background materials and some jolly nice sculpts too. I can see myself biting pretty hard on this . . .

Hmm, while the Norse mythology is good, there are a few key points that are a problem to me: There were never any orcs in viking myths, and the Tolkien view of elves and the norse view of elves are totally different. As for the models, I don\'t like the orcs too much, too lizardy for me. The ELves and Dwarves look good... but I\'l never play with dwarfs that haven\'t been sewn from other body parts! :p

A game using the actual norse mythos for elves and dwarves might actually be interesting.
Personally I\'d rather see a game system using the Terry Pratchet elves. Scaaaary.
This looks like yet another fantasy game. I\'d like to hear if it\'s any better or worse than what\'s out there.
Oh, and another damn dwarf with mohawk! What\'s with these people?
Some good figs otherwise.

While there are no orcs in norse mythology there are evil giants... Perhaps it\'s an interpretation.

And I think that\'s a topknot, not a mohawk. At least I hope it\'s a topknot.

They don\'t need to be up to Rackham\'s standards. West Wind figures are typically priced under $2US each. For what you get they are a bargain and a half!

ya...me think that they are really nice and cheap....wonder if Singapore stores are going to carry them...otherwise, I have to bear the expensive postal charges...

Well, the word orc does get used in Norse literature...I recall seeing it once...but to get down to a more basic level, Tolkiens idea of good and evil just doesn\'t wash with the Old Norse world view. Behavior code was a honour based system His books make for a good read, none the less, and a game system can play well (or poorly) regardless of the background material.

Buyer be ware!!!!

For many of you this will not make a difference, but for people looking to use these dwarfs in their 28mm armies you need to know this. I bought the Dwarf Command pack this weekend. It was only $10 (US) and it came with 5 figures. The figures have lots of character and they are very clean. I only had to scrape the mold line down on one of them and one has some extra metal that isn\'t terrible noticeable, but I think needs to be removed.

Now for the bad news. These dwarfs are advertized at being 28mm, but they are not. They are huge. All 5 of the command pack are of a comperable size to Reapers Warlord dwarf. Actually, they are about 1mm taller. They make Games Workshop models look like gnomes. These things are 35mm at least. They are excellent models, but they are not 28mm.

Still, if you don\'t care about they size they are very well done for the price.

Man, my typing skills left me on that last post.

The Dwarf Warfs Dwarf Command Pack did have one amazing plus; women. It had lady dwarfs. Some of you may have heard me bitching in the past about the severe lack of dwarf ladies made by any quality company. Well, these dwarf femmes are pretty good. They are ugly, to be sure, but I think that was intentional, and they have no facial hair. They are large chested and stout. Real dwarf women.

I know this reopens an old thread but I have only recently stumbled across West Wind products, and in particular their Dwarf Wars series. As a painter and not a wargamer I am bowled over by this range. They are classed as 28mm but they are bulky, much like the Foundry dwarfs, so they are easy to paint especially if your eyesight is not so good. What else is going for them? Well at just over £1 each (standard figures) they are tremendous value, the range includes female characters, respectably clothed, and a host of mounted figures which is practically unknown in the dwarf world. There is a superb war mammoth and some amusing pig and wild goat mounts as well as sturdy horses and wolves. For me the great selling point is character. The poses are for the most part imaginative and amusingly exaggerated in the best tradition of heroic 28mm. I\'m totally sold on this range as a dwarf fanatic but there are many more ranges, equally exciting, inexpensive and well made.

Dwarf Wars Elves

I have a set of the Elvish Archers and the Personalities. For what it is worth - they are sweet figures and infinitely better than the comparable GW High Elves. Less static - more variety of poses and equipment - a very good price. Now if I could ever get around to painting them...lol!

Explain how these are cheaper. They are 24 pounds per box set of 24 which is about $70 oz. The GW box sets are about $50 oz for 20 (or maybe 16) so the price looks similar to me. The rule book is about $60 oz as well so GW rulebook is cheaper although you have to still buy the race army book as well. Still I dont see these minis as being that much cheaper than GW stuff.

For this money you get metal figures (dwarf wars) instead of plastic ones (GW). I know some people like plastic for conversion and so... but it never floated my boat (well save the plastic dryads from GW... love those) so I\'ll stick with metal.
