There is so much more to life than money, and I have realised that job satisfaction is really important.

A year ago I took a pay cut to go from working in Planning for Coventry city council to being a full timer in GW Coventry and I have never looked back!!!Doing something you absolutley love and are really passionate about for a living top trumps a job that pays better but destroys a tiny little piece of your soul every day you are there!!! And for the naysayers out there (you know who you are!) Yes, I manage to live comfortably from my wage and support my wife and son. We are even planning a second child.

This is an absolutley fantastic opportunity, and experience that money cannot buy. If I thought I was up to scratch I would stick in a portfolio myself!

I love this attitude.. I just wish I had the balls to go through with it. I really dislike my job in Japan and considered opening a gaming store for plastic modellers (Tanks, miniatures etc) and miniatures/fantasy painters could buy and come and paint with provided materials since most people don\'t have the space for large or elaborate setups.

Sort of like a Gamers/Modellers Cafe? Maybe someday...

Do it! I remember a similar place near Akihabara that I used to go to every week to meet friends and game. They had a great selection of rpgs, boardgames and card games and from what I could see, it was pretty popular. We paid about 1000 yen each (there were four of us), and we were there about 3 hours each time- they liked us and gave us a bit of a discount. You could do something similar with your painting idea- well, maybe not the discount, but still. :) I think there should be more places like that in big cities, not just in Japan.

It sounds like an ideal job to a painter, but after 8-10 hours of painting 5 days a week, how much are you going to want to paint for fun?

aye apart from my obvious lack of skill, this would be the other major factor in stopping me applying. i think i would go blind after a week

Wow, lots of response here!
I think the thread started of well but then quickly got onto the popular subject of \'eavy metal pay. (which is understandable).
To anyone who is serious about the trainee positions your first questions shouldn\'t really be about wages etc, ask any of us in the team and we will all say the same thing \"we do the job because of our passion for figure painting and the hobby\" and getting paid to do this is just a bonus!
Maybe your fst questions should be more like this-
\"Does Fil really have a draw stacked full of chocci bars and crisps to keep him going?\"
\"Is it true that Neil has been painting that long that he no longer needs brushes and now uses mind control?\"
\"Did Anja really save \'eavy metal?\"
\"I\'ve heard that without Daz, Joe would still be dreaming of gold, is it true?\"
\"Has Keith really got enough equipment on his desk that would put the A Team to shame?\"
\"And does Daz really have a bionic eye?\"

This really is a fantastic chance to be part of a team which is going from strength to strength, to be surrounded by what you are passionate about all day and to learn from others is amazing.

If you want this, then go for it! :)
cheers all! Daz

Scarily, Neil was on the Eavy Metal team when I worked there (for a grand total of a week). He was scarily good even then and, IIRC, painting a Samurai Beastman for someone on Lunch breaks.

From the sounds of things the general atmosphere has improved loads over the years.

Razza, neither interested in the job nor the money aspect, but the answer to these questions however ;)

...plus, how about throwing in \"Who\'s the hardest \'eavy metaller? lol

Hey I need all that stuff Daz!

All 15 differant static grasses, all the differant sands, rocks, bits of resin, \"green\" of cuts, bits of wire, basing kits, bits of slate (including the 10kg under my desk), tools, my rediculously large bitz box, brass etched bits and bobs...........

Ok so you may have a point :)

I\'m still painting for fun almost every day.

I do a little bit before I start work (1/2 hr - 1 hr) Work till lunch, scoff down some food then spend the rest of my lunch paintng my own stuff. Work the rest of the day till it\'s time to go home, then paint for another hour or so before heading home.

In total I paint for about 2-3 hours on my owns stuff a day on top of work. The weekends I take off to go out, see friends etc but even then I will sometimes manage to fit some painting in. :)
