eBay Fraud

Apologies but I\'m ranting and getting it off my chest with you, my fellow sensitive creatives.

I came home and discovered that some unscrupulous b*stard has hijacked my ebay account (I can\'t get into it) and listed 23 items under my name.

I\'ve had to spend the last three hours on the phone to my bank, credit card company and Paypal cancelling all my cards and make sure that nothing comes out of my accounts. Plus I\'ll then have to go to the pfaff of re-activating everything with new cards. I had to then email ebay (no direct line) and will have to wait up to 48 hours for them to get back to me - by which time some unfortunate people will have bid unsuspectingly on these bogus items.
Plus there are listing implications AND my 100% feedback!

I had a busy day at work and was looking forward to coming home to finally finish my second WOH piece but have wasted my night and wound myself up because of some unscrupulous, immoral, thieving, deceitful lowlife!

Just wanted to warn people to beware and also to share.

*rant over*

Damn, not another one, the b*stards, if you have the time, e-mail the bidders of the items, and explain to them about the situation, (even if that means typing something out and copy/pasting it to a dozen people) other than that and waiting for ebays reply there\'s not much more that can be done unfortunately, you are right to rant about this, anyone in your situation would feel exactly the same.

Is it not possible to phone up ebay and speak to someone direct, rather than e-mailing and leaving a message in there inbox for god knows how long?

Couldn\'t find any direct way of contacting them. Don\'t know if that is ebay.com and not ebay.co.uk
Everything just seems to direct me via an email route.

Oh yes mate, I\'ll be doing that. Even if it takes all bloody night!

Damn dude that sucks. Whats worse is this assclown is sitting at home thinking this is funny, while you have to bust your ass, to fix it.

Could we not all just go bid on the bogus stuff and win, that way your feedback will be intact and you won\'t have to worry about pissing anyone off.

Then you just have to get ebay to cancel the final value fees charged to your account?

1. That sucks. I hope you get it worked out.

2. How does this happen? Are all E-bayers at risk?

3. I have no 3.

1 - So do I. I\'ll keep you posted. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up to beware!

2 - No idea. Guessed my password? Doubtful but possible. The email I got from ebay telling me I\'d \'changed\' my password lists the IP address that the request to change was made from. I don\'t know if that makes things traceable (I\'m technologically challenged) but I guess the snake has all the bases covered.

3 - At least you made me smile dude. I need it after today.

Jez

ps - At least I did get some stuff done on the WOH project.

Peace guys!

speaking of ebay... anybody see this message before? \"This seller cannot currently receive payments.\" if so is it anything to worry about? :(

Possibly. It could be that the person is just changing what accounts he deals with through PayPal. When none are listed, you can\'t take payments.

Or

They could have been caught in something scummy.

As to the ass-monkey that\'s causing our friend trouble by faking up the account...

Yes, he can be caught by the IP, but it could take a while, because ebay is so massively used, tracking down single users by that method isn\'t easy.

Having had to do that kind of thing at my last job, occasionally, with only 1000 users or so to deal with, I can\'t imagine how hard it would be with the millions that use Ebay.

That sounds pretty nasty, Logan.

Any idea how the whole thing started? Rather, any idea on how the guy did the original hijack?

That sucks big time! :(
But one question, why did you have to cancel all your cards? ??? I thought he only hijacked your ebay account? What could he do to your bank accounts?

I wondered that too. Unless you\'re PayPal Account was compromised too?

I sell regularly on Ebay. I follow these simple rules.

Ebay and Paypal - different passwords.

Ebay and Paypal - change the passwords regularly. I change mine monthly. Numbers and letters - no proper words.

Never enter a password on any computer that is not running updated AV and is scanned daily. Is behind a good Firewall and has anti-spyware running and used.

Hope everything works out OK.

No idea MB. I tried to get into my account and was told I was entering an incorrect password. When I went to my email account I had an email from ebay telling me I\'d changed my password then 23 separate emails informing me of all the iPods I had just listed. No surprise that all the auctions ended in about 9 hours time. Someone trying to make a very quick, illegal buck.

1) - Mainly because I\'m taking no chances. If he accessed my ebay account then there\'s no telling what else he might have accessed. Better to experience the pain of waiting a week for new cards than experience the pain of sorting out the thousands put on my credit card.

2) - I believe you need a credit/debit card before you can register for an account on ebay. All your listing fees at the very least therefore come off your card. That\'s over £40 in the case of these erroneous items that were listed under my name, that ebay would be taking out of my bank account if I hadn\'t cancelled it.

I feel sick...

Just about managed to wrestle my account back from ebay but imagine my utter despair when I found I had 20 odd messages from people regarding these false iPods.

Some people have already paid and are even talking about paying for two. They are saying things like \"Thanks - these will make great Christmas presents for my kids\" etc. It breaks my heart and makes my blood boil at the same time thinking of families being duped so close to Christmas and some utterly unscrupulous reprehensible lowlife!

I have tried to contact everybody on the list but even though I can access my account, I just keep getting a message saying \"ebay have put a temporary block on this account\" so I can\'t even get in touch with people offering condolences.

I know ebay aren\'t culpable but I\'m annoyed with them nonetheless because I spotted this yesterday before the auctions had ended but because there\'s no live help (the \'live help\' button only took me to an email section - how \'live\' is that?) I couldn\'t get in touch.

I was able to physically talk to my credit card company, my bank and Paypal immediately. Now if I could have contacted ebay straight away I could have stopped this and those poor bidders wouldn\'t now be out of pocket.

Thanks to everyone who responded with help and encouragement.
My (already) dwindling faith in human nature has slipped even further :(
