Even If you\'re Pro at something, you can still suck at it

I was going to comment on the topic that started the thread, but just realized that anything I say will be overshadowed by the Image of the Elf on the rocks. You know, the one with the eyes...my two cents, even if you\'re a pro at something, you can still suck at it. Just look at President Bush for an example, he\'s a \"Pro\" president, but he SUCKS at it. Hell, I\'d even vote for the Elf with the eyes before I\'d reelect Bush.:)

The definition of professional is merely that you get paid to do it. It doesn\'t matter how assinine the job is. So pizza delivery boys and doctors are both \"professionals\" in their fields. I\'d never even think of paying for a painted miniature anyway. I would just get that miniature and paint it myself.

A guy at one of the northern Virginia stores a few years back actually told me that GW only hires pro painters to work in the stores, so they can show people how to paint. I asked if he had painted any of the minis in the display case...he said he had painted most of them.

Exactly. It\'s like all those people who say they work for GW. What 99% of them mean is they work in a GW store! A bit of a difference. Like working part-time down your local store means you\'re on a par with the people who really matter up at head office!

But I still don\'t consider someone who churns out armies right and left a pro painter. They paint for a living, yes. And kudos to them for having the ambition and patience to do that. And if you can paint tons of minis and paint them well, hallelujah...you are a saint. Seriously.

Hmm... maybe I am a pro painter. I don\'t paint armies and yet I do paint for a living (not a very good one at the moment admittedly). I can paint armies. It will take a bloody long time and a hell of a lot of money though. :D

Ah, but what if you couldn\'t paint for toffey, had not time to paint, wanted really well painted figures, and had lots of disposable income?

:D

I think another reason that people use \"Pro Painted\" is that they don\'t know better or they think \"hey my mini is damn good\". I know some people doing that and when I look at their Minis I only think \"Oh my good, poor Mini\".
I think more important that the \"pro painted\" is the Name of the Artist or the Mini itself. I think a lot of people here know the good painters =) and so they only attend the auctions they want bid for.

Darkstar brings up a very interesting point, that in all professions, if you chocse to rank everyone there would be a best and a worst. Like the \"pro painters\", there is a worst and right now they are painting \"another mini\" to sell as \"pro painted\" on eBay ! Also somewhere there is a worst doctor as welll, and come monday morning someone has an appointment scheduled with him or her as well ! Lastly let\'s keep politics out of this thread, because it was Monica Lewinski who SUCKED the most, with Clinton a close second !!!!!

Actually that depends on where the word is used. In certain industries Professional is actually a designation of only the higher skilled, educated groups. I used to sort of resent that I was not a \"professional\" when I was a salaried Library Specialist. I needed an MLS (master of library science degree) in order to be called Professional. I forget now what I was actually called on the paperwork.

p.s. I absolutely LOVE that bug-eyed elf. You are soo right to say he looks like Walace, and a whole army of those would be fantastic to see on the battlefield. He\'s actually not badly painted. Sure the edge lines are a bit shaky, but the color incorporation is well thought out and the eyes point the same way and to be honest look like he intended them to be bulgy. I\'d be proud to field an army like that....well, not all on big goofy stacks of rocks.

He only went for $5.5. Wish I\'d bought him now:flip:

LOL LOL LOL funny thread!.... I guess I\'ll add my 2 cents in here... Scoff... \"Golden Demon means your Pro\"... Ok now I\'m chocking. Hey.... knock it off with the Golden Demon stuff! So they painted one or two or three really outstanding models??? I\'ve won awards at Historicon, Nashcon, Gencon, Little wars and Wonderfest! I\'ve painted for Old Glory, Ral Partha, and Battlefront N.Z...My work has been featured in several rule sets and magazines! One of these days I\'ll get to a GD when I can afford the freakin admission! I would sort of consider myself a proffessional painter I,ve been doing it for at least the last 7 years for a sole means of income.. damn I\'m poor! Now I\'f only I could just learn to be a proffessional photographer too I\'d be in the money! Hmm I wouldn\'t even consider adding Pro painted to one of my mini\'s ...sounds way too arrogant! But thats just my opinion, and for what its worth somebody else said it just right... The better painters don\'t put it in their E-bay titles, with maybe one exception, and most of the \"pro painted\" ones aren\'t. But GD isn\'t the only painting contest on the planet and WD isn\'t the only magazine either! Just the most successful!

well, i recently stopped using the pro painte dtag in my ebay ales, since so many of you have pointed out how lame it is! :) I have no Demons in my pocket, although hope to fix that soon, but also believe that the Gd isn\'t the level of paiting people should look at. If you win a demon all you\'re proving is that you\'re piece is good enough to be used by Gw as a marketing tool, IE it reflects their point of view of fantasy and sci fi. I\'m not knocking them for it, becuase it is a GW comp, but it might be worth looking elsewhere, I\'m still hoping that GenCon in the UK will actually pick up a bit on the mini front.

Since Ebay have added the second title option, I will always put in a second line saying I did it, and that seems to create enough interest, so no more pro-painter for me, even though I am one.(a full time painter who\'s not half bad, i\'m not claiming to be brilliant)

someone has mentioned Haley as well in this thread, anybody know if she actually still paints? I mean, sje hasn\'t entered anything this or last year, and her website is hopelessly out of date(even worse than mine)....

As for Jen Haley, she posted some new stuff lately here on CMON. Said she was recovering from a long medical hiatus:~(
Hope we get to see more of her stuff soon.

Yep, Jen is still painting. She DID go to some GD\'s last year, but didn\'t enter all of them. She\'ll be at Chicago GD I know.

Otherwise, everybody come and enter the Gen Con Indy competition. Our focus is finding the best painted minis and give those painters prize money! (ha, you know I can\'t post these days without mentioning Gen Con Indy!)

So anybody have ideas for a Painter scale, what each level of painter might be called??? Or are we just each a different type of painter?

I\'ll look at painted minis in general on Ebay for one purpose... if it\'s a sculpt I\'m looking for. I\'ve purchased some \"pro-painted\" minis that have already hit the stripper and are awaiting a new paint job. I paint my own minis, why would I want someone else to do the job for me? :)

Or maybe a \"Poster\"? Someone who posts so much on the forums they have little time for painting? I\'m getting close to that one!:p
