I\'m sure he\'s done some wonderful things, but I still can\'t get over the monumental failure of the Chappaquiddick episode.

If not for fame and fortune, he\'d most likely have died in prison.

There\'s no doubt that he committed a crime and if things had gone differently, he would have at least gone to jail for several years. But let\'s be realistic, it wasn\'t premeditated homicide, it was a dumb scared mistake after the fact. After about five minutes, his subsequent actions became moot, she could not have been saved.

If Kennedy was fundamentally a decent person, that event must have haunted him for a lifetime. If he was the Evil Liberal Monster TM that his detractors painted him as, he still spent most of his life in public service, seemingly trying to better his country. Playing those evil cards pretty close to his chest, I\'d say.

Over here he was llways associated with \"Chappaquiddick island\" and being overshadowed by his brothers.
Whatever good he did was always \'tainted\' by our media with those things.

But a negligent homicide convinction would most certainly have ruined his senate career.

I understand it was a dumb mistake, but NOT reporting the incident until the next day smacks more of \'protecting his image\' than it does \'being scared\'.

I agree he has done some very good things as a Senator, and I\'m not bashing on him because of his Liberal leanings...but rather his priviledged and \'above the law\' lifestyle.

just curious, but what gives him the right to be buried in Arlington National?

I thought that was for military only and I don\'t believe he was in service....

Nevermind, found it - he was Army....early 50\'s.

That\'s not just on your side of the pond. A lot of Catholics here had problems with him for a host of reasons - the Chappaquiddick incident was just the most publicized.

A lot of people in the church I grew up in were also upset by his reputed drinking and womanizing (though I haven\'t cared enough to see if they were right, so I consider that hearsay), as well as his stalwart and unabashed support for abortion. I know it frustrated my mother to no end that the church she loved had him as a prominent member, and that the press always mentioned his religion.

Rant on -
His actions or rather lack of action lead to the death of another human being. Moot or not - if it had not been for the wealth of the family, he would have gone to jail.

He had all the womanizing of his older brother without the charm or the sense to keep it from public view - and lived most of his public life like a drunken extra from Animal House.

He was an obstructionist ass in the senate - for example he was all for alternative sources of energy - as long as they did not affect the view from his Cape Cod home or the area where he sailed his yacht.

Teddy the \"Lyin\" of the Senate was yet another example of a rich politician living the Do as I say not as I do lifestyle.

You can pick on me all you want! I\'m not above that!;)

What I meant with my hyperbolic statement that he used his position of money and \'name\' to skirt the law.

He probably wouldn\'t have died in Prison, but his senate career would have.

I do, however, support many of the things he did (politically speaking). But it doesn\'t erase what I think was a MAJOR flaw in his character.

as a person and fellow baby, i\'m sad that his life is over.

and props to the way he stood up for the things he believed in.

not to say that his ideas weren\'t full of moths and wormlings, i just didn\'t like his politics. and the way he used his family to duck certain responsibilities to society.

The things he believed in?

Like Chappaquiddick jokes?

http://hotair.com/archives/2009/08/28/one-of-his-favorite-topics-of-humor-was-indeed-chappaquiddick-itself/

The SOB was worse than I thought.
