Effect of Matte Varnish on Shading

I’m painting a Blood Angel Space Marine. Zenithal highlighted the model using an airbrush, gloss varnished, washes, matt varnished. I’m now experimenting with glazes for the first time, and very much enjoying building up the shadows and highlights further.
Some of the glazes have left a little bit of a gloss residue on the mini, and I’m thinking about matting the model down again. Will this kill the shading/highlighting I’ve achieved with the glazes though ?

Using Vallejo Umber and Red Shades from their Wash range for shading, and glazes made from various Model/Game Color and Model Air for the highlights.

I can affect it a bit, so you'd have to compensate for it by overhighlighting / overshading a bit, but it depends partly on the varnish used too.

It can be irritating because of the extra work, but what I'd do:
- paint it like you would
- warnish it
- wait a day or two

if the highlights / shadows 'disappear' then you'd have to redo them (and a bit exaggerate them), then revarnish.

then again I didn't have problems with VAC-Matt varnish for example (but I almost always overdo my HL-s a bit), so with a bit of luck you won't have to too. Just be prepared.

I'm no master painter, but personally I haven't had much problem with Matte varnishes in general. They do have a slight blending effect, and they also don't have the shiny, colour-intensifying effect of satin or gloss finishes, but overall, I like what matte varnishes do.

It is better not to layer a lot of coats of matte varnish if you can avoid it but two layers won't hurt. Matte varnish has an opaque component that gives it the matte look.
