[Pictish Mini Painting]

This has been done for a local friendly painting comp, tried out some new techniques, mainly much thinner paints. I tried out NMM but still need to work on where my light lands etc.

But its all practice for GD entry.

Hey! I'd like to start by saying this is looking very nice so far and you picked a fantastic piece to work with. Your transitions are looking very smooth, however, the shadows could be a bit stronger. Under the left arm there's some goodness going on there OR that might be the natural shadow from the angle you took the photo at. Either way, where the pieces join and your shadows should be it is a good guide to go by as a colour guide. Moving forward considering the red in the armour one thing I found very helpful by painters whom have much better technique over light sourcing than I, is to turn the lights out, and put a spot lamp on where you want your 'sun' to be, photograph that, and then turn the lights back on before painting. This photo can be a great reminder of where your edging highlights will need to be the strongest. A strong upper torso can hide quite a bit underneath it from direct lighting surprisingly enough and sometimes it is hard to consider where to put them on such dynamic models. That being said if there is highlighting on the gun I don't see it at all yet, maybe it's not there yet. It's a good choice in colour and tone where it compliments the model without over powering it. The blue in the spirit stones to tie into the crystals and the blue tones in the grey rock you did balances it out well too.

Thanks for your tips, i know shading is my weakness, its especially apparent as this was painted from a white basecoat, i normaly paint from black, but i need to get used to white\grey base as it gives better colour tone and if i want to get better and start serious competition i need to improve here.

But its all practice and improvements

It does! Never quit and don't worry about other people. If your next mini is better than your last mini then you are doing everything right! Don't ever let others keep you from being excited about your draft and it'll all work out, heh.

I know big pics shpw off the issues but its best to be honest and see where improvements are needed, but slightly smaller might be best as not to destroy folks net connections lol. Thanks for your feedback though, i enjoyed the model but there were a few miscasts on it tat were hard to sort, but its all practice for Golden Demon

What is the picture in reference to, as its an odd figure, how does it relate to my image? its a green figure by a Mrika?

I was just hoping to show you that everyone sucks when starting out and the fact that you don't suck is a great thing ;o)

The thing is to keep pushing your limits and don't let setbacks or critics slow you down.

Yep, thanks for that its great to see even the best started out small. Its why i am entering GD 2012, it forces me to push myself and i get to see what the competition is like first hand and learn a lot..oh and give the FW stand my wages haha

oooo, I can beat that for a starter LOL.... painted with enamels, car paint and brown wood gloss

The funny thing is that ive never been as happy with a mini since this one, but I think that is what keeps me pushing for better or I would still be painting them like this!
