i think the prism may be a BIT to short and fat. if you felt like it you might want to elongate it a bit

you are right, but this is the max I could expect from a Xmass decoration from Ikea lol

I am doing a Japanese themed SM army. Not only Anime, but also traditional icons and imagery as well. For the bikes (which were going to be a component of \"Swift as the wind\" trait), they were going to be very similar to Kaneda\'s bike from Akira. I have a larger die cast and plastic model of one that i got from Japan and i have measured that and scaled down the plans. I have heaps of spare marine bikes and bits to convert with.
My concern is where do i start and what approach do i take? My dad has a vac former and i was considering carving the pieces out of balsa wood and vac forming them. But then i don\'t know if i am making it too complicated for myself.

Kaneda\'s bike from Akira is one of the best bikes I have ever seen, and wanted to build one since I sae the movie, almost 15 years ago (I am a huge Akira fan).

The first thing you have to do is cut off all those Harley Davidson details, since Kaneda\'s bike is more like a race bike, than a road bike. the mufflers need cutting and the front end needs some length and a custom hull ( I suggest eldar bikes hulls); you also need smaller tires - slik maybe).
In fact, even though you have a lot of SM bike bitz, the more I look at Kaneda\'s bike, the more it reminds me of Eldar bikes with tires.

Hope I gave you some tips.
BTW, Do you know how to make moulds/casts? If so, you could scratch build 1 piece, and reproduce it as many times as you want.

cheers

Good idea about the eldar bikes. I think i have 4 or 5 sitting around somewhere. I have thought about the tires and i am always looking for nice thin ones. Possibly i will get a Tamiya/Any brand bike kit or two for some tires.
I have never cast up anyhting so i wouldn\'t know where to start unfortunately. That is why i am looking at the vac forming. If i can make the forms out of wood, my dad thinks he shouldn\'t have too much problem with the forming. An additional bonus is that i should (emphasis on should) also be able to form the mini windscreens on them if i get the right kind of clear plastic (the normal stuff goes milky when you heat it). For some of the smaller engine parts i am also considering using his metal lathe to machine them so i can form them, but now i think that casting the engines would be better.
So next question, how difficult (or easy) is it to cast components? My dad does model airplanes and makes his moulds out of wood, then creates the mould from fibreglass and then casts up from there. So while he has experience in fibreglass moulding, i don\'t think that would be a practical solution.
Ok. Just talking and writing has helped me get an idea going. I think i will have to machine and then cast the smaller parts (somehow), but for the outer panels, vac forming might be better as they come out really nice and smooth.

I am about to move into my new house, so stuff is on hold while it is in boxes, so i am now planning what to do when i get back to it all.

Moulding is not easy. I moulded and casted some parts of the titan, in order to have them symmetrical and identical (see the pulsars and the pulasar generators and also the calves), but, like I said, it is not easy, nor cheap.

Having to make a whole squad-army of converted models, I suggest some plain and simple conversions, otherwise it will be too hard and you\'ll eventually risk in loosing interest (god knows this happened to me way too many times).

cheers

My only concern for you is that when you tell people you\'ve built this stuff yourself, they won\'t believe you lol Fantastic work.

@ikim This project is going along very nicely indeed. How much more have you got to do?

@yramrag Undave has made an ork biker boss using some resin model, which looks more like the Akira bikes than the usual 40k ones do.

@Bill Please change your avatar back. That one scares me. lol

@Roger, yep i saw that. And that was exactly what i thought. Very nice.

@Ikim, Fortunately my father is not short on time, money, patience or talent. Odds are when i start to get moving with it, he will probably come up with a method to make the process better.

I was looking at it on the weekend and i am about to start drawing up my detailed plans tonight (hopefully) and then i can work out what i need and what i need to make.
