Electromancers mainly sculpting log

Hi, it has been a long time since I posted here, I had a log a while ago which i was in two minds whether to just continue on from that one or start a new log, obviously I decided to start a new one. I started sculpting again about a week ago after stopping about a year/year and a half ago, so want a fresh start from it all, and looking at my old log I realised I had quite a few projects on the go and was unlikely to finish most of them so a bit pointless drudging them all up.

I hope you dont mind looking through sculptures, i am not that great at painting and it will be a rare occurrence in this log to show a painted model.

I found some greenstuff and had a sudden urge to sculpt something so made this:

Its about 40mm and intended to be a mek or even a warboss . I posted it at the waaagh forum first and got some feedback, I'd love to do commissions and work professionally so I took the feedback and added some more detail and fixed a lot of areas and this is where the sculpture is at now:

Planning was a weakness I had so I made a plan and tried to give the model a much bulkier size to it, without making it too big, I decided that a greenstuff miniature would be a centerpiece of an army so making him a bit weedy doesn't really make sense, this way it stands out and looks more like a hardened ork mek now.

Still have some more details to add and lots of work on the gun, im planning on making it some kind of energy/skorcha combo weapon.

Thanks for looking, C+C are more than welcome :)

I decided to do something different for my next sculpt, a Space Marine Apothecary. As I am trying to improve it is important to do things in a way that I don't fall into my previous bad habits, even as I was working on this sculpt I had to fight the urge to make it into a Chaos Space Marine. Onto the Pictures!

Still have work to do, mainly the sword arm and helmet. The sword will be replaced entirely, I'm planning on making a chainsword separately and adding it after, which is what I'm going to do with the backpack also.

I've been looking through my old stuff and came across a great unclean one I made and painted ages ago, I decided to do some painting even though im not much of a painter I enjoyed adding some more colour to this guy:

I darkened the skin and added a yellow to several places to give it a bit more depth as it was quite dark and boring otherwise, did some work on the teeth and horns since they were also quite dark. The eyes are proving to be a bit of trouble, I was thinking about making them pale like dead eyes but have no idea how to do that, whenever I paint my mind is boggled at how talented a lot of the painters here are. Now I just need to finish them eyes and pick out some of the details so the skin is a bit more interesting.

I also found a load of half finished sculptures and the impulse hit me to continue working on my ork army Da Stompa Boyz. I finished this guy which is one of the boyz, he is armed with a hook hand and a simple cannon which would be loaded like a blunderbuss...how does he load it?.....orks don't think about these things and neither should you....onto the pics!

The grey putty and the cannon was all I did to finish it off today, I found some grots and other bits so expect some more updates soon.

After looking at the great unclean one pictures I took I noticed that the two boily thingys beneath the eyes actually looked like eyes themselves, not only that but they also change the look of the face to something I like a lot more.

I used a small amount of putty and filled one of the boils so it looked a bit more like an eye and then covered the former eyes with a bit of detail. I had wanted the eyes to look pale, kinda like dead eyes but after looking at the model from a distance having large yellow eyes looking back at you is kinda creepy.

This great unclean one is a bit different from my others, they (and Nurgle) are often depected as fartherly figures, I think this one looks more child like than that, I imagine him being looked after by the other greater demons in a weird sort of way. The sculpt was not one of my favorite models that I have finished but I enjoyed painting it and trying to work in some character and make it look interesting, it has sparked the painting bug in me, while I probably wont paint a huge amount expect to see some painting here.

made the choppas for the ork nob, wanted them pretty bashed up and primitive looking and tried to make them look like they are made from a variety of scavenged materials

then I finished a grot that I made a while ago, it was almost finished (the grey is the new sculpting) grots in my army will be pretty badly equipped so expect a load of shivs and one shot rifle type weapons

Finally finished the ork mek which started me sculpting again, have to say I enjoyed improving this sculpture on the course of making it.

I made the weapon and tubes look really cobbled together, I reckon he is a bit of a maniac and probably blew himself up at some point which resulted in most of the bioniks making up his body. I also didn't like the little claws on the peg leg so made them stubby toes.

Squigs are an important part of ork society and will be an integral part of my army. I haven't actually looked to see what use a bunch of squigs will be in the game but since I no longer play it doesn't really matter. I can always find a use for them later if I need to.

This squig was one of my old sculpts,

squigf1.jpg

I had a comment to add little heal claws and thought I might as well:

squigupdate1.jpg

I also made a little squig, I'm not sure if I'll add it to another model or not

Going to make a bunch more since they are fun and quick to do, also since squigs come in all shapes and sizes it will be fun to come up with some interesting designs.

Did a bit of painting on one of my old sculpts:

View attachment 21578

Will be part of my nurgle force as a cultist, still a lot of work to do, the knife is just blocked in with chainmail, going to make the yellow "hood" blended (hopefully) to green, make the cloth more splotchy, im also practicing doing thin lines on the material around his neck, not sure what the end result will be like but can also give it a few washes if it doesn't work. Not going to spend ages on this guy though since the sculpt is only ok and just practicing and trying to learn as much as I can.

sorry for 2 updates in 1 day, i hate taking pics and been up for many hours, just had to check it was actually today that I posted the previous update :S

I decided to make something big. I also didn't want to make another great unclean one and I wanted it to be the centerpiece of my Nurgle collection.

Here is a work in progress picture of the thing i made:

DPscale1.jpg

I rooted around for a miniature to use as a scale and picked up one of my favorite minis, the culexus assassin. I could never get the thing to actually work in the game but I liked the model so much I used it quite often.

I am pretty sure that in the game epic 40k there were daemon princes that were as big as titans so it isn't that much of a stretch to think that something like this would be around somewhere. I tried to make it look like some of the older art and used some references to get that feel, hopefully it comes across.

The thing with Nurgle is a lot of people seem to go over the top and add loads of eyes and tentacles which while there is nothing wrong about it, it's something that I don't really like. Although the sculpture is really decayed and pestilence ridden it is relatively clean looking. Hmm that didn't make too much sense, I guess that I mean it doesn't have a lot of stuff sticking out everywhere which would make it look less appealing to me.

I still have quite a bit of work to do, mainly make the weapon which will be a giant plague scythe, the hands of course and deciding if I want to add some giant "antler" style horns or more fleshy pipes coming out his head, after its baked I'll add some extra detail and a lot of nurglings!

did a quick job on fixing this tree man type model I made, I was experimenting with resin casting at the time (it was a bit of a disaster)

Was pretty fun to sculpt it at the time, not sure why I choose that model to cast though since I haven't got much interest in wood elves and don't need more than one

well been a bit longer than I wanted to up date, I've been doing a lot of sculpting and taking in everyones advice so really getting into it at the moment. The break from posting is mainly due to trying to organise where to put my photo booth thing as for some reason i thought i needed one that takes up half the bleedin room. The pics are just quick ones to show some wips.

A long time ago I decided I wanted to make a squiggoth but one that was rokkit powered! I think I did the head even longer ago then added about half the scales before i stopped,

here is the plan i drew up

and here is where it was when i uncovered it

this is what it was actually like but wanted to show a full body shot

it was interesting looking at it since there was some random areas of scales where it was obvious i was trying to muster the strength to do it and could only manage small areas sometimes.

Here is where where I am up to now - the pics are in serpia since they are way too busy with all the different coloured putties, also will try to include a model for most my builds so you can see the scale better since I don't game they might be bigger or smaller than you think :D

the lightest colour is the new additions
I changed the plan a bit to add a couple of thrusters on the back feet, it has got to fit in with da stompa boyz so needs some bionics :D I remembered why i quit doing it while doing the scales, doing them by hand starts off pretty fun but by the time i finished an area i wanted to throw the thing against the wall, then i saw that i only did a tiny part :( I wanted to use a stamp I made but it wouldn't have matched the existing scales so had to persevere.

I'll probably keep to the plan for the most part, keeping it as a quick burna squiggoth with not that much armour, I might add a few areas for a small squad of boyz to fit on since some of them would want to get into battle as fast as possible and with a load of flames everywhere to make a grand entrance :D

So next up is to make the claws on the back right leg which will be replaced with metal ones, that foot is pretty bashed up, well both the back feet are since the thrusters would do some damage to them, the other one has smaller claws as they would be ground down by the impact of the foot landing and theres also some armour on the pad which has a few spikes on it for extra stomping, unfortunately you cant see in the pics. I'll probably do the tail last as i am looking forward to doing it for some reason and it will keep me motivated.

As always C+C welcome and thanks for looking.

Lots of variety in here mate! When asking pro artists for tips You will always hear them say keep doing it every day. So its good to see lots of things finished and ongoing in this thread. I myself have only just started to live by this advice, in my 2D painting anyway. Squiggoth looks nice and the best so far. The orks look rough, but are pretty good and have interesting details. Main crit would be to achieve tidier edges on the sculpt to improve your works further. Milliputt is better suited to hard edges as you can sand it. Green stuff doesnt give a pretty result with sanding. Try 50/50 mix greenstuff and milliputt as well. And of course super sculpey firm is awesome to use. Keep on posting mate.

Can't add much more than this. It's nice to see the progression you've made from the first post through to the last post and does prove that the more you practice the better you get. Magic Sculpt is a really good putty to look at too, it's less rubbery (and cheaper) than green stuff and not as "clay like" as milliput, plus can be sanded, drilled etc. I'd not replace green stuff or milliput with it, but use it in addition to them. Oh, green stuff + milliput mixed together is brilliant for doing really fine, crisp details

thanks guys, i actually had a bit of milliput and mixing it in has made stuff a lot easier, i've done it before but it was ages ago and forgot how nice an edge you can do with it. I've not tried magic sculpt but will have a go with it next time i'm buying some putty. Been working on the edges since that is the feedback I seem to get a lot so will see different putties and plasticard used more in future posts.

still figuring out what to do with the armour on the squiggoth and which chains to use so I finished a grot and made a few ork heads to use on future boyz

I found him with his right foot missing which I knew I had sculpted when I was making him, so I decided he must have lost it in some battle or another and gave him a peg leg, then since he only has one arm I decided he wouldn't really be able to get hold of any kind of decent weapon so he'd have to make do with a rock.

Was fun making a bunch of heads in one go, the pic is not great but should do for a WIP shot.

Oh I also finished another squig

he is pretty chubby and ended up with a bit of a trollface, sorry for the bad pic again, will have to get it sorted.

Not much of an army so far but it is fun lining all the sculpts up and seeing them as a group, I'll have to take some group shots soon.

got most of the basic shapes set for the squiggoth but its at a stage where showing it would make it look crap so i'll post an update when I've added some extra bits.

I've been doing some work on various things as well since I get bored easily as any ork mek would

Baked the ork I made a while ago, it caught a bit but didn't deform any of the details so lucky escape, I've altered my baking set up and nothing has caught since. I also added his choppas

did a small grot/snotling, tried to make it look like his clothes were looted and didn't fit very well

then a snotling

need to adjust things to take better pics since they are so tiny

then I made a mechanical ork which will probably represent a killakan or mega armour

the pic isn't great but shows what it will be like, I'm going to add an engine on the back, lots of rivets, and make the weapons changeable

And as promised the group shot,

tried to position it all so each one could be made out, a couple of the orks are from my old log. Things are progressing nicely at the moment, also i'll likely add some stuff to various models such as weapons and glyphs in the future so might see a few changes on some of them.

Hi. I see lot of work, but maybe you work too fast? I mean the details, sometimes the skins not the best maybe. The lizard skin is very good, how do you do this?

Rothskin makes a good point. Lots of work here, which is great. Most pro artists will tell you to get good you have to do it everyday when you ask them for tips, I have only recently taken their advice and they are so right. However, you do have to always look at yourself and judge it honestly to decide what you need to focus on improving. Here, it is edges and refining details and surfaces to neaten them up. So slow down for a moment and really work one up so its perfectly finished as best you can. You got loads of great little poses going on, those orc heads are good to. I reckon you'll get real good at this sculpting malarkey soon enough if you keep it up.
