Empire Handgunner - Just a little help

I\'ve decided to have a little fun with an Empire Hand Gunner to have a break from painting Ultramarines. I just need a little help choosing a few colours and clearing up an identification issue.

The mini has only been base coated so far.

Firstly looking at this image you can see an unpainted area between the rifle, hands and arm which does not seem to belong to anything. What do people usualy do with areas like this? just paint black?

Also what colour would you suggest to paint the barrel and mechanism? Also, what are those two nobbly bits over his fingers, are they part of the mechanism also?

Paint the Barrel Boltgun metal.
The mechanism above the fingers is both the Matchlock and the Match so therefore you could use Brazen Brass for the most and Snakebite Leather for the Match.

As for the solid area, paint it Black for armies, for display purposes, Drill it out.
