Enamel based weathering products and acrylic paints

Hey everyone,

I am working on a project that is going to require some extensive weathering, and have done some research on what products are out there. I've noticed that most weathering products on the market, specifically from Ammo of Mig Jimenez and AK Interactive, are enamel based. I was going to order some of these products, but then realized they may not be compatible with the paints I use.

So my question is simple - Are Ammo of Mig and AK Interactive enamel based products compatible with acrylic paints such as Vallejo, Reaper Master Series, or Scale 75? Can they be used together?

yeah you can use all kinds of weathering products on acrylic base no problem. the other way around is more difficult and 'incompatible', to use acrylic on weathered objects.

as long as you add a layer of varnish between the two it won't be a problem. It's just painting basically anything over the weathering kinda ruins the effect.

So as long as I use enamels on enamels or enamels on acrylics, im ok. What happens if you don't use a varnish? What kind of varnish is recommended? Thanks!

if you try to paint acrylic on enamel/oil weathering it will pool like if you didnt primed the mini, sort of.
you dont have to varnish acrylic to use weathering though.

Also, oil based paints change over time due to evaporisation of substances in the paint. Acrylic paint don't. So, acrylic over oil can cause the acrylic paint to crack.

Is that really a concern with miniatures though? The amount of oil paint used is a fraction of what would be used in an actual painting. Lots of people use oil washes and then an acrylic varnish, if it happened at this scale I'd expect to see a lot more complaints/warnings about it.

Don't know. It takes time for it to show, so I have no idea. But I wouldn't risk it.
