English Only Please . . .

Briefly, I live in a broadly bilingual country (Wales of course) that has a ratio of 1 Welsh speaker (very old language, older than English) in every 6 Welsh people. I don\'t speako the lingo (though I can identify words, phrases and stuff in converstaion) but I get annoyed with majority languages (in our case English) being used like a bludgeon to batter minority languages. Even now in Wales some companies (both big and small) try to ban Welsh (Cymraeg to give it its proper name) being spoken in the confines of the workplace. Thomson\'s - a travel agent - tried it recently and got a right pasting for it. A Tesco tried it up in Caernarfon if I remember correctly, and they got promptly twatted as well. The biggest culprits (unsurprisingly) are incomers who own hotels in the resort towns. Invariably these people are English and have a paranoia that the Welsh being spoken between Welsh people is always about them, hence not speaking in English. This will then escalate and end up with the hotel owner banning Welsh and then the press get involved and the locals go ape again (quite rightly).

To go a step further, England (and by England I mean the monarchy of England or Parliament at different times) has tried to do a proper job on Wales and the Welsh language historically. In the late 1700\'s and then the 1800\'s, under government rule, law courts were made to operate only in English in an attempt to kill the language off. This was one method anyway. Other methods included English-only in schools and a Welsh Not that was a piece of wood that would be hung round the neck by rope and it had the word NOT written on it. Whenever a child spoke Welsh it was put round that child\'s neck. It\'s an utterly shit thing to do to a country and a language and kids.

I\'ll make that point again though about what I mean by England - I mean Monarchy and parliament. And the gentry actually. They raped our country of minerals for wealth and paid us f*ck all. But that\'s the way things work. No point being bitter about it when you can make your home a better place in the present :D

Rant over.

Oh the irony of an American stating \"English Only\".
We have had so many fun discussions on here about what the American version of English has become.

Tongue once again in cheek.

well English is the official language of the US if I\'m not mistaken. And from a business point of view, why should we accomodate those who are in this country and refusing to learn the language? It\'s fine if they want to speak their native tongue at home or in the country of origin for their mother tongue. Also, if you don\'t have anyone working at your store speaking any other languages other than English then the proprietor has every right to state that business is conducted in English only.

English is 90% French badly spoken anyway.

My view on this is that the shop keeper may ask people to order in which ever language he decides (the customers do need to be able to communicate to order!) but it\'s not his place to decide that it must be so because it\'s \"in America\".

It\'s also daft because it\'s not \"America\", it\'s the United States of America - The comtries comprising South America and Canada may have something to say about the term \"America\" being all part of the \"Americas\" as such.

Anyway, Last time I checked being a bigot was still legal... you don\'t have to be a racist, sexist, heightist, ageist to be a bigot, you just need to only accept it your way.

As a subject of the British Empire (tongue in cheek) I am perfectly within my rights to walk on any soil and demand that people talk to me only in the queens english don\'t you know?!? lol

As an aside, it\'s only \"your country\" because the French, spanish and english helped you take it from the native people.

I just looked and the US doesn\'t have an official language but English is the main language meaning over 80% of people speak it. I agree that the owner can put up a sign and say Please make your orders in English but the sign he had up was offensive. It needed to be worded differently.

I agree with the irony of that statement, but I am also in agreement that it should be the official language of the country. It is the accepted language of government and our bureacracy, but I think that nowhere in our laws is it stated as the \"official\" language.
There are something like 30 states that have declared English as their official language but nothing on a national level. There was an attempt in 1996 to make it the official language of the US Government, but some kind of red tape caused that to fail even though I believe the bill it was attached to passed.
We live in such a PC society that I don\'t think it will ever be the \"official\" language until we can get over the fact that one person, somewhere, is going to feign being offended to get some attention.

Actually the English kicked us out and then started hiking up prices on things and we didn\'t have any representation in parliament. That\'s really how this whole thing got started. Us rebels just got sick and tired of being jerked around and decided to stand up to the English Monarchy that was the Playground bully.

So there! :p

I like no official language... I like things messy. Big free-for-all\'s are great and encourage free thinking.

Why don\'t you adopt 50 official languages? Canada has 2 and they\'re doing ok.

The way I see it is just paperwork that\'s not going to help anyone get along, it\'s just going to force one group of people to do something.

If the guy wants to chase customers off and isn\'t in a position of running a monopoly then I don\'t see much wrong with his sign.
I don\'t think being a grumpy old bastard is illegal is it?
