I personally would never think of taking a job and moving to a country and not learning the language. I would do everything I could to assimilate to their society, not expect them to assimilate to mine. It seems a bit rude and a bit arrogant thinking that the society that you are moving to should bend over backwards to meet your needs when you should be bending to communicate your needs in a way the society understands.
In other words, I\'m not going to go out of my way to help those that won\'t help themselves.

As to the sign, as far as I\'m concerned it is his business, he pays the rent, the utilities, the cost of running it, he should be able to put whatever he wants up. AFAIK Freedom of Speech also extends to written word.

Well, let\'s be honest here, Legal Immigrants are required to have a certain level of skill with the English language.
This sign is aimed at Illegal Immigrants, who IMHO, don\'t have a right to complain.

Heh...you don\'t have to go all the way to Mexico anymore....that\'s the case in some parts of Texas these days.

Not posted, but the staff just kinda looks at you and shrugs their shoulders if you speak in English.

I take it you have tried to order at a burger king in Arizona then.

I\'m just going to be polite and keep my mouth shut instead of ranting. In all reality this language issue goes back at least as far as 1919 when Theodore Roosevelt wrote in a letter that in the United States of America we should all speak English and adopt English as the national language.

On a business note, if this guy had SO many customers not ordering in English that his business was disrupted he would have been better off getting some translations done.

And as for \"Official US Language\" Federally no, but if you look up each state DOES in fact have an Official language. Well 40 or so of them do.

Note I said I would not expect, nor would I raise a fuss if they didn\'t. Many of the places I went to in Hong Kong did not have English and it was still under the British Rule at the time.

If I find a place in a different country that I really like to eat at and they don\'t speak my language the onus is upon myself to learn how to get the food I desire.

True, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he\'s going on principle and is willing to loose a few bucks to stand on that principle. Which I believe, as he is the owner of the establishment, is his right.

Yeah I actually agree with you on his right to say it (as I said in an earlier post) - I was just looking at it as a purely business point of view.
