Equally well painted?

Hey all,

Do you think these two minis are equally well painted?

Rusty orc warlord (June \'04)
http://www.coolminiornot.com/57502

And

Dark Elf Beastmistress (Nov \'05)
http://www.coolminiornot.com/105498

I feel like my painting has improved a lot in the last year and a half, but I am still getting the same scores. Is there something I\'m missing?

Edit: Changed the Beastmistress url ;)

Yes, they\'re equally well painted... In fact, they look exactly the same... Well, they ARE actually the same! ;)

I can tell no difference between the two.

BUT..I understand your point. You have to realize that everything is evolving here. What may have once been an 8 mini, now can only get a 7.

So, you may be a better painter, but the score is the same, but the SITE scoring is tougher...So, I guess you can mark that off as improvement!!

This is the Beastmistress link:

MClimbin, these are very different types of mini and you should remember that votes here are for the mini not the paintjob only - as you\'ll see elsewhere this is CoolMiniOrNot, not CoolPaintjobOrNot :)

FWIW I don\'t think the pictures on the elf are doing it any favours, with better pics I think it would end up eventually at .5 higher or so.

Heh, that was a rather funny mistake. No wonder they have the same score! ;) I fixed the link.

Well, thanks for the heads up and especially for responding so quickly. It had not occured to me that the scoring was getting tougher.

My first thought regarding the dark elf was, \"I converted the blade, I did nice smooth skin, I did my best NMM ever. What more do I have to do to get a higher score?!?\"

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Guess I\'ll just continue working and practicing. Maybe by next year I\'ll be up to 7.1. ;)

I agree with supervike, in a lot of ways you HAVE to improve to keep getting the same scores over the course of this last year. I think particularly in 2005 the bar has been raised in mini-painting and on cmon, and I would basically assume that what used to be a 7 may now well score a low 6.

Chock it to timing and number of votes.
You\'re showing real progress on this site if you can stay in one place.
Some day I will repost the first thing I posted here (after following some minor suggested improvements) and see how much worse I score.

No offense, I feel the Orc is over-rated. That being said, the beastmaster is an excellent paintjob. I gave an 8. Your painting improved leaps and bounds between the two.

I could see the beastmaster getting a mid 7 overall score if you give it a photo that actually does it justice. Your photos are way too dark, however if you look closely enough it is fairly obvious that you improved quite a bit. On the notion of scoring getting tougher, oh yeah... it is... I remember my first 7+ that I got. That thing would be mid 6s now. I never really saw drastic improvement in my ranking/scores until this year. Let me tell you that it is a TON of work... As of 3 or so months ago I was in the 1400s for my rank and within the next couple months I have full intentions of being in the top 500. I have been going all out in studying and most importantly actually, improving my photography skills. I actually had a recent breakthrough with my camera after reading through one of the articles on the site. Take a look at these before and after photos that have NO PHYSICAL CHANGES. The only changes I made were in my camera! Yet the difference is so unbelievably noticable.

Anyways... Keep it up, work hard, you\'ll eventually get there.

I\'d agree with most of what\'s already been said. It does keep getting tougher to get the same mark here. I\'d also add, though, that I look at the voting as scale as logarythmic. In other words, it takes a bigger improvement to move from 7 to 8 than it does to move from a 6 to a 7 and 8 to 9 is even a bigger leap forward. So, while your beastmistress is definately better than the orc, I\'m not sure it\'s a whole point better. (that\'s why I use a lot of double voting: in order to use half points.)

Ack! :flame:
You used the evil pseudo-word \"utilize.\"
You are not permitted to use that word. You must use \"use.\" It\'s shorter, sounds prettier, and means exactly the same thing.

Only Jessy Jackson is permitted to use the word \"utilize\" and then only when he rhymes it with harmonize or sympathize or somesuch word.

(I had a writing coach once tell me there is no instance in the English language where utilize would be preferable to use. I thought hard and rhyming is the only instance I could think of.)

The offending word hass been \"expunged\" :D
I only used \"utilize\" because I\'d used \"use\" in the previous half of the sentence and I hate repeating the same word.

And yet you use \'I\' twice in that last sentence, and the variation \'I\'d\' once in it as well. That\'s three uses of the same word in a single sentence. You can\'t hate repeating words TOO much.

Forget the scores for now. Your beastmistress is streets ahead of your orc in terms of mastery of technique. The orc is tabletop quality, the skin being particularly poor on blending/layering; did you use inks? They are very hard to control. Your beastmistress shows much more control of transition and the NMM is good, though for the life of me I can\'t see why anyone uses it. And your basework is a step up on the orc. Be happy that you are making such progress and ignore the scores; they are subject to too many variables and some manipulation.

No.

Oh you probably want to know why. I gave the elf an 8. The all over composition is very good. Nice color selection and well painted nice base.
The orc I gave a 7. The metals are good but everything else seems flat. The flesh needs more shading and some details need more highlights. Both nice paint jobs tho.

1 more down for being a freak.
