Isn\'t that physically impossible? I recognise the sketch, inceredible that someone managed to build it :wow: I keep looking at those steps... my brain hurts :(

Don\'t look at the steps; look at the structure around the steps. That\'ll help you realize where the illusion is. ;)

I\'m still a bit confused... :duh: But I found this, which I thought was a very nice feature :D

It\'s a great piece, but I wonder if he had to photoshop it some.
Perspective illusions are great, and should stand on their own, but I\'m not sure this one does - it\'s hard to tell because it looks just out of focus at the trick point.

It would be interesting to see that Escher building shot from a different angle. Could be that it\'s made to be viewed only from one angle for the \'trick\' to work.

Follow the row of trapezoidal blocks on the back roof, behind the mini-tower over the stairs. Notice the right hand side is in line with the bottom of the second floor, but it\'s all the way at the top on the left hand side.

It\'s a forced perspective trick. Very clever indeed.

And I can\'t take credit for the link, I gleaned it from Dakkadakka.

Cool. Would love to see the model from all around. It\'s really great work.

By the way, over at the official Escher site there are some fly around movies of some digital 3D model in the download section.

Movie on this model: this.

Lego model using a similar technique:

following that link you will see enough different angles to see that the illusion is only workable from that exact angle - specifically look for the photo that shows the doorway on the ledge at the bottom of the spiral stair. (bottom row, second from the left)

The good thing about it is that it works as a piece of terrain either which way. It\'s marvellous when the illusion works but it\'s well made anyway and impressive even when you\'re not in the right position to be tricked. Marvellous stuff.

Really cool!
But it hasn\'t much in common with Escher. His stairs are physically possible. I already made a digital 3D model of Escher. And it really works!
