Essential Batman comics (+others)

I have planned to order some comics from a local game/comic store and I would like to get some recommendations about (mainly) the Batman comics I might be interested. I already have Dark Knight Returns (and that IMO lowsy sequel), Arkham Asylum, Long Halloween, Bloodstorm and Batman & Dracula, Hush 1 & 2 and some misc issues. There are other Hush albums as well, but I don't really know which is which. Because I also really like the art of Jim Lee, so if there are other good Batman comics drawn by him, I would like to know. You most likely are going to mention at least Killing Joke and I most like get the Deluxe version. I have kind of mixed feeling about Year One. I just didn't like the bleak art that much. Though IMO many early nineties and late eighties comics were plagued by these awful color choises. I mean, how much drugs did those guys do :D Anyways, feel free to recommend your favourites.

You can recommend other titles as well. Series that I have/know are: most works by Simon Bisley, Slaine, ABC warriors, Okko, Blacksad, Requiem; Vampire Knight, Preacher, Lone Wolf & Cub, Hellblazer, Northlanders, Fables, Judge Dredd (in general), V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Conan (ongoing dark horse series), Hellboy, Lobo, Akira, Sin City, Bone...I can actually recommend most of these, but you can add something from your favourites.

a couple that i really enjoyed were,
Y the last man (a series about what would happen if every living thing with a y chromosome dropped dead at the same time)
The Goon (i can not recommend this highly enough eric powell's artwork is top notch the writing is fantastic and the humour content high)
Walking dead (much better than the series)
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (Jhonen Vasquez is a God who also brought us Invader Zim)
Squee's Wonderful big book of Terror (another Jhonen Vasquez title)

That should keep you occupied for a while

In the Gotham/Batman books:-
GCPD Books 1-5
Batman Contagion (both books)
Batman NO MAN'S LAND series
Batman Wargames (all books) plus Warcrimes.

Others:
Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN and linked DEATH books.(In fact anything by Neil Gaiman)
Phil Foglio's Girl Genius (printed web comic)
IF you can find any copies; William Tucci's SHI series
OKKO by Hub (still waiting on volume four in English)

And I'll recommend "Lyssa and the Pirates" by Charlie Wise, which you might only be able to get via his webcomic site http://www.groovykinda.org I've ended up with two copies, one autographed and one with a personalised message and artwork.(Muy Bueno) The books silly, funny and a good' if slightly chaotic read.

Walking dead was one of those I forgot to mention myself, but I haven't got any albums yet. Though it might be interesting. I have followed to the show as well. Goon is something that now rings my bells. I also liked the art, and should check that.

...Batman NO MAN'S LAND series

This is one of the reasons why I posted this topic:smile-big:. I had forgotten this apparently rather well made series. Thanks for reminder.

True that Alan Moore can't fail you quite often. Hasn't he done some Chtulhu-series as well?

oh yeah and for a bit of sacrelicious fun try Battle pope. it's kinda childish but entertaining. also the Lobo para-military christmas special was a lark. and perhaps Preacher.

You wanna talk childish but strangely entertaining: Axe Cop It's written by the artist's younger brother (age 8). This may be why the title protagonist has a T-Rex in sunglasses with chain guns for arms in addition to his signature weapon for fighting crime. Grim Tales "The Kids Down Below" is an excelent parody of Billy and Mandy (and about every other supernatural kid's show on TV), as well as the Power Puff girls Manga by the same artist.. This guy is too talented.

I ordered Conan vol 13, and couple of those No Man's land albums. But I have to check those other suggestions later as well.
