it was recommended to use \"etch\" primer. this is a type of primer not a brand. as i was having trouble with paint coming of as i was painting.

i am unsure about using hardware grade primers on minis. have any of you masters used these grades of primer?

if anyone has any tips on brands and/or warnings they would be apprieciated.
thanks

I use a primer called \"Holiprim\" from a company called Hobbyline Products. It can be used on all types of material and all types of paint can be put on it, and it\'s very fine and hard.

yeah I know, I also tried a web search

It\'s a new product that my local hobby store here in antwerp stocks. Those guys themselves don\'t even know on what this primer is based (enamel, acrylic,...). They just told me that the salesperson from that company told them that it could be used on all types of material for all types of paint. The spray can also doesn\'t show much info: just some general info on using primer and the usual spray can warnings. So no manufacturer information or adresses and the composition is also missing.

You must understand that I was a bit sceptical at first, but after the first try I was immediately convinced that this is one of the best primers around.

FYI - for UK residents

Halford\'s grey acrylic auto primer is cheaper and less gloopy than GW. Comes in light and dark. Works well on vinyl and plastic as well as metal

I have heard of etch primer and believe I have some at work somewhere, although I have never used it. Mine comes from Du Pont.

To be honest, I don\'t really know what its all about except it is special stuff for special jobs where you need to paint on hard, very smooth bare metal (like chrome and stailess steel). I would think tha using this would be overkill.

An automotive primer would work, just becarefull that it doesn\'t come out too thick (as many of the specialist primers are designed to be flattened inbetween coats) and that it doesn\'t melt plastic.

On the whole, GW primer works just fine.
