Etiquette on asking for votes

Is there a proper way to do this? On the one hand, I want people to get over and vote, but on the other, I don\'t want to aggravate folks. I have been posting once in the forums under submission discussion and one shout (and, uh, coming up with silly general discussion topics such as \"etiquette on asking for votes\"). Should I spam the shout line every few days? Maybe during different times of the day?

just post a shout every once a while. also you could try putting \"comments welcomed\" or \"comments apreciated\" in the part explaining about the mini u painted

Usually saying \"please\" and \"thank you\" is enough to let people know you\'re trying to be courteous about it.

I\'d go the \"Vote on my mini\'s or I shoot this dog\" route but that\'s just me.

I think that the \"Discuss Submissions\" forum is probably the safer route than the Shout Box. But I\'ve watched both work pretty effectively.

Go into the discuss submissions and put your mini there. Ask for advice, or areas you know you need improvement on. People will usually be more than happy to help you out. Also in the information part about the mini, ask for comments and be polite. I always try to comment on minis from people that ask.

Tell people you\'ll try to leave comments if they leave comments for you. I know I love going to my browse screen and seeing new comments pop up!

Post your model. Then wait a day or two and post a nasty comment UNDER A SECOND account with a score of 3 or 4. Then Complain in a thread about the jerk who left the comment. Everyone will go look, feel bad, then vote you tens to help bring your score \'back on track\'. I\'ve seen this work quite effectively recently, although I\'ve yet to try it myself...

It\'s not worth it folks! Just put something up in Discuss Submissions and you\'ll get all you need. Just make sure you take scores with a pinch of salt though, because if you end up with a circle of voters you may also find yourself with massively inflated scores. There are a few in the top 100 that crack me up each time I look at their galleries - no way should some be top 100

So, feel free to put something up for the forum members to see if you want to see some serious feedback, but watch out for the topsy-turvy padding of scores thereafter if you get sufficiently far down the line. Just make sure you\'re not pimping your mnis or prostituting your good name. Self-respect is the key

As for the top 100, I\'d say the same for positioning of painters within the top 500-750. There are some scarily average painters with more than respectable scores out there. Is it mass deception?

God, I\'ve been looking through the galleries of the top artists through 100 or so, and I\'m impressed by how much good work is rated lower than some right old rope! lol

I\'ve been politely asking for votes and comments in the shoutbox recently. It does seem to work, at least you get your mini up to the 10-20 votes level fairly quickly and get an idea of what its \"true\" score is. Of course it may also attract snipers, but I don\'t know any way of testing or quantifying that.

The shout box does seem to be a better way to go. You get a more generic voter, instead of just forum members. Also, many people who visit CMON don\'t visit the forums, and some of our memebrs (like me) only hang out in the GD forum, so we never see the stuff from the Discuss Submissions forum. However, whenever I am voting I look at the shoutbox and vote on any minis people are pimping. So the Shoutbox is the way to go for a more accurate rating.

Its like when I go to Karaoke on Monday nights; My wife and I go with a large group of people to the club (at least twenty) and cheer for a friend of ours. He SUCKS, but he wins EVERY week. Why? Because the votes are based on he gets the most/loudest applause, and WE are VERY loud! The poor bastard is actually starting to think he sounds good, and he is the worst of the lot!

@Rev - I scare myself sometimes. You are quite right about the inaccuracy of the votes. Did you happen to catch my comment a while back when I said \"You don\'t have to be a good painter to be in the top 50, you just have to have gotten lucky 5 times.\" Probably one of my more astute observations.
