yeah Andy, how is your new life as a master painter? :D now you can triple charge your comission work eheh... seriously im so happy you made it, sometimes hard work do pay off!

I think the acceptance speech was a gold.

Axenarf certainly is gold. No surprise there. NMM leads the way!

Demi makes an excellent point. Your words of wisdom turned me from a crap amateur painter to a not-so-crap painter. That's gold.

Really happy for you brother. I think in retrospect you worked to your strengths, and this paid off.

You just walk along and then you go nahh I cant have won:) Any way on the flip side its slightly taken away from by what happened to sprocket and Lee just don't understand that tbh. I really wouldn't mind doing some commission work maybe this would help dunno wait and see eh?

This Monday Andy got himself a new suit to go with his new status.

Who is who? I love putting faces to all your names.

Thank you so much for the pics. I really had no idea of the level of competition until I saw some of these. It's like a Putty&Paint convention. Really amazing. Is the work just as remarkable at other venues over there, like Salute or even GD?

In some respects Euro-Militaire is far superior to both Salute and GD.
BUT please remember that Salute was until recently (last 10 or so years) primarily a Wargamers show and GW's Games day Golden Deamon is really a 'One Trick Pony'.
Yes, Golden Deamon has had some superb stuff and some bloody well deserved winners of Slayer Swords (Sproket being one) but as a standard Euro is a World Class competition with an Open judging system which is quite stringent. In fact so stringent that there were several categories this year where NO Gold awards were issued.
You could think of it this way:-
GD = Minor League Baseball,
Euro-Militare and the World Expo = Major League Baseball.

The World Expo takes place every three years and in different locations, this year was Italy. I understand that the next one is in Boston, Mass sometime in 2017.

Now in regard to the USA competitions, all I have to go on are a few photographs, but the level of quality from what I have seen appears to be close too, if not on a par with, Euro.

The World Expo moves around. This past year it was in Italy but mark your calendar, the next World Expo will be in Chicago (although not until 2017). I think the Boston one was back in 2005.

From online pictures of the events, I really don't think Crystal Brush compares. While Crystal Brush draws some super talented painters thanks to the top 3 prizes, overall it's on a much smaller scale than Euro or World Expo. All you have to do is look at some of the historical winners from the past couple Crystal Brushes. There are some good entries, but quite a few of the winners are just average table top quality. As someone who paints those sorts of figures it makes me sad the subject hasn't had a better showing.

The closest comparable show in the US that I've been to is the MFCA show in Philadelphia. It's open system judging like Euro, usually draws a number of European painters as well as people from across the US, and is decent sized. I get the feeling that the MMSI show in Chicago next month is similar, although I've never been so hard to say for sure. I also think the SCAHMS show here in LA has some really talented painters but I don't have a good feel for the size of that show. I'll get my first chance to check that one out this coming April.

The impression that I've got is while the US has a lot of talented painters, there's just a larger concentration of fantastic painters in Europe. So while there may be similar shows in the US it's hard for them to really match the big shows in Europe. Again, that's just the impression I've got, I may be totally wrong.

Crystal Brush has had table top quality winners? Sign me up! Lol...I plan on going this year anyway, if my commander signs off on it. However, next year I'll be living in the Midwest where I can frequent a lot of these shows in Chicago, Indiana, etc. I found out recently that I fairly respectable painting comp took place minutes from my home in Olympia Washington and I missed out. It's called Enfilade and it uses the open system.

I wont lie. I have been surprised in the past at some winners I've seen at fairly large conventions here in the US. They've been average and sometimes even poorly done. It does say to me that we aren't as serious about painting over here. It's a shame, really. But it also means to me that the field is more open for play :) Just look at the origins of most if the painters on P&P...

This years Brush winner was very good, I thought. Anyway, how to finally meet some of y'all there in 2015.
