Ever seen this?

Hey folks, was just wondering if any of you have ever experienced this or know what caused it. My son just finished painting a Necron Destryoer the other night. I sprayed it with a coat of gloss clear coat, everything is good! Then last night I added a layer of dullcoat to take off the shine, and it looks like the dulcoat pitted and blistered the paint. We\'re probably going to have to strip the dumb thing and start over again.

What works best for stripping one of these GW plastic models. I normally use Stripease on my metals, but I\'m afraid that will be too harsh on this plastic.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Cheers,
Grumb

my thoughts would be that the first layer wasn\'t dry, and the dullcoat reacted to it?

I have had some success using Pine-sol and a toothbrush on plastic minis....Others have talked of \'simple green\' but I found that didn\'t work.

I was kind of thinking that too vike. Where is is the worst is where the decals were applied. Which is strange cause I even brushed on a layer of hardcoat before (about 5 hours) I used the Dullcoat. Maybe the hardcoat wasn\'t finished drying. The strange thing is that is pitted the paint on areas where the weren\'t any decals too. The majority of it was painted in Boltgun metal over chaos black primer.

Never had Dullcoat do this before, but then again I don\'t normally do plastic minis either.

Little Vike is going to really pissed with me. He painted this himself and had really done a pretty good job on it. Think I\'ll run by the shop and pick him up a new one. Then I can experiment on stripping paint with this one.

Oh well....

If it was GW\'s Hardcoat they used to recommend allowing to dry for about 24 hours between coats. It could be that the Hardcoat was only surface dry and the Dullcoat has reacted with it.

If you were in the UK the problem would be easily solved, but I don\'t know exactly what the Dettol equivelent is in the US.

PS Grumb are you going to register him on CMON as Little Vike? ???

Thanks Mike. As for the Little Vike moniker, I wouldn\'t do that to someone I didn\'t like let alone my own son... lollollol

please dont doo this... dont use pinesol!

use break fluid it works faster and it wont soften the plastic!

Bummer, sure sounds like the varnish wasn\'t cured completely and the Dullcote reacted to it. For stripping I\'d try oven cleaner, I\'ll have to use this myself soon on a plastic GW mini.

Thanks guys. Funniest thing happened. I pulled Will aside when he got home and said \"Son, I\'m sorry, it appears that the Dullcoat had a wierd reaction with the Hardcoat and it messed up the mini.\' I handed it to him, and he looked it for a second and said \"That is so cool....\" Apparently he felt that it made it look battle scarred. Go figure....

So, I guess I won\'t be stripping him after all. Thanks for all of the advice anyway.

Cheers, Grumb

P.S. - @ Einion - I just popped over and took a look at your gallery. Fantastic stuff there! Love to see what you could do with some Fantasy minis, ever try any?

Here you go DR.

The majority of the damage was on the rear section and sides, though there was some on the shoulder pads and front as well. Basically everywhere I had brushed on the hardcoat to seal the decals....

He really did a pretty decent paintjob on it, and he\'s only 9.... hopefully I can keep him painting.

I have some old ones from years back but I wouldn\'t want to show them except for a \"how not to paint minis\" lesson :D

I mentioned a GW plastic above, I bought some chaos knights to experiment different techniques with and I\'ve had four of them done for months now, just been very lazy about photographing them again (I need to work on the lighting) and one needs stripping because the armour turned out crap.

I also have a number of Mini Exchange #4 pieces of course, the first is now completed so I can take shots of that while I\'m at it.

Uhhh, OK, but you do know it was a bad accident right??...

Anyway, the mini was primered with GW Chaos Black primer, then painted with Bolt Gun metal, pretty liberaly and straight out of the pot (have gotten him to understand thinning the paint yet). We then after a he was done painting, sprayed the mini with gloss sealer (Krylon I believe) and let it dry overnight. Then he applied the decals that came with it to the mini. Then he applied hardcoat to the decals to make em stick. Then about 5 hours later we sprayed it with Testor\'s Dullcoat. I think that the Dullcoat reacted with either the gloss coat, or with the GW Hardcoat and actually bubbled the paint in places and made the decals look pretty messed up.

Like I said, had it been mine I would have stripped it and started over, but he really likes it. Happy accident I guess.

Anyway, hope that helps WF. I\'d paint some plasticard and experiment to see if you can duplicate the look before I tried it on a painted mini..... good luck.

Cheers,
Grumb

Hey! Tell little William that he has done a mighty fine job! That is very impressive work, and even more-so considering his age.

My youngest is 9 and she has shown some interest in painting, but not the patience part....
