Extremely harsh scoring trend

Um... I think that makes it MORE likely. Frankly, the closer in ability people are the more likely they are to be jealous of one another\'s accomplishments. I\'m not jealous of anyone in the top 10, what\'s the point? It\'s like resenting Tiger Woods for playing golf better than you do. OTOH I do a little envy whoever is #(my ranking-1) ;)

Excellent painters behaving like spoiled asses here is not a new phenomenon, but it is certainly a disgraceful one, and those involved should be ashamed of themselves :flame: Of course it DOES help highlight the grace and tact of those with superb ability AND good interpersonal skills :)

just noticed one of my models on this thread..
I agree with Dammekos..This model at some point went to 9.4 way too high even in my own opinion..and now dropping to a more realistic score..
I have no problem with scores given as long as constructive critique with it.
I also prefer it that it wasn\'t a below the belt anonymous thing and that it was a name put to it.
I think some people miss the whole point of the site at times though.
They post extra low scores because they don\'t agree with the score it is at and leave shitty comments..but hey that\'s their particular pleasure.

One thing I have found whenever I post is an initial spike from non registered users then a gradual levelling out of both scores. This is probably due to new visitors seeing something they are familiar with in the first few pages and going wow...10...wow...10....wow...10..It also helps when a lot of models posted at the same time are of a lower level 4-5 as this is the only experience they have of the site.
The members votes are always more realistic.I myself did this when I first visited the site but now take a lot more critical view and see what really counts I don\'t have a structure as such just go with what I like.

Unfortunately there are some out there who don\'t agree with scores they get pull their galleries then slag everyone else off.. Arseholes...

I\'m with Mike have been doing a lot of searching in the low 5\'s to 6\'s a lately and offering help.Currently have about 12 new guys emailing me where I am helping them further..That\'s the great thing about this site for me and it is also speeding my own redevelopment as I look at a model while painting and think If I just do that little bit maybe it will impress..

Long live CMON I say The snobbery and bratishness of some painters ( a real minority) will indeed wear off as they get bored and get a new shiny thing to distract their pea sized brains..

Can I take this opportunity to encourage as many people to make POSITIVE criticism\'s of paintwork. Whilst I agree \"its horrible\" is no help to anyone, the same can be said of \"great work\".

I would very much encourage people to make genuine comments that will help the painter improve. A comment like \"nice paint job, but the painting of the skin needs to be a little lighter and the base distracts me from the model\" gives a painter some guidance on how to improve.

After all we are here to improve our painting are we not?

So I would very much implore everyone to give sound guidance and honest first reactions, (and then give me a 10:beer:)

So whilst I agree that \"2 - Its horrible\" is a poor comment, that is not because of the score, its because the comment did not help the painter.

IMHO a sound 8 ish...

This is what I think is the cause of the comment in question (on Fredy\'s mini), not jealousy.

I tend to feel, as I am moderating comments, that people should be allowed to sink or swim on their own merits.

I do delete comments that are just mean for no purpose, or the ones that have to use expletives.

Scoring is harsh, and I think it has gotten worse.

I agree with Vike on that score, and not just on here! It seems people everywhere are pushing for the extremes of perfection these days. THese pieces are really good and imo theyre sitting in a good niche at the moment.
I also agree with what DR said, it really is catch 22 for the Mods here seeing as deleting comments might even seem opressive in some respects. I come here because of the exellent people mostly and I think most of you show Just what this is all about. It\'s so much better to openly discuss the issue than snipe away at this or that :)

I always have to shake my head at \"table top quality\" or below. It makes me wonder if people have ever seen the quality of paint jobs at gaming tables or not. And, if they have, I want to frequent their gaming facilities :D Many of the regular \"gaming\" paint jobs I\'ve seen are lucky to have three colors :D

I have noticed MINOS\'s comments around, and he seems to be a very harsh scorer (for example, he commented on Nano\'s 54mm High Elf with a 7). But these people (and it is only a few) are pretty rare. And when you have 10 (or in Nano\'s case, about 30 :D) other comments giving you a decent rating and some honest critique, or even an OTT rating to defend you from the nasty harsh person, does that one anomalous harsh rating really matter? Focus on the positive whole, not the negative minority. Demonherald I think has the right stance on the matter ;)

~Bill

PS. I think both those pieces are a little overrated, but at least solid 8s for both from me.

When I posted this, I wasn\'t really making it a post about overall scores, as they are pretty well regulated in most cases. My main point was the total and unjustified lack of respect shown by cretinous comments from people who seem to have a big mofo of a chip on their shoulder.

Any form of sincere criticism is good and I wholly support it either positive or negative... these type of comments aren\'t remotely constructive... they come across as deeply childish and as I previously said, deserve to be treated with contempt.

so when do we start fragging people?

no but seriously, who cares?
i never get good scores, wether its because of crappy minis and bad cam work or the lack of a high standing name on cmon i wont speculate in.

there are always morons, in every aspect of life. they thrive on good decent human beings and the aggravation they cause.
leave the guy/s (who have neither life nor girlfriends or even a remote access to either) alone, dont care just let it be.

water is wet, women are weird and people behave badly, thats just a part of it all.

I think it\'s because people don\'t like that you have a paperclip in your eyebrow.:p

Great thread guys. Nothing can illustrate my point to my son as to why he is not allowed to post any better than the current dicussion here. I still visit this site, but no where\'s near as often as I used to for this particular reason. There are some extremely talented painter here which inspire me. I enjoy viewing their work. What I don\'t enjoy is the scoring. There seems to be a core group here that routinely downgrades minis, and yes, I would definitely say it is out of jealousy and spite as well as envy. This site is no longer for the average painter, but has evolved to an elitist site where only the best painters (and photograhers) can ever hope to get a great score. Negative ( or below average) comments seem to occur more often. Like I said, I still enjoy this site, but don\'t enjoy the snipers. I will not allow my child to post since he is only an average painter and doesn\'t need the discouragement that seems to be offered far too quickly as of late.

Hey here is an idea Chern, how about linking an \"average score given\" stat to each member that displays on their profile? Maybe this would help solve some of the heavy handed scoring.

@ Braveheart why not get your son to post in the WIP threads rather than the main galleries.. That way he will get a lot of useful constructive help and guidance it really is a much less cutthroat place..The galleries are often a quick snapshot for people but the WIPs are genuine helpful step by step help....

I\'m making an \"enemies list\" lol

When the dust settles it\'s all a load of bollocks really, and a completely trivial matter!
I, personaly, don\'t have time for ciliques and bitching. Why? Whats the point?
Cant\' someone just be proud of something they\'ve done and post it?
I\'m not a fan of my own work, but I take pride in what I produce. No one will ever take that away from me with a snide comment or a randomly low number! :]

@Demonherald- Not a bad idea. Right now he gets critsim and positive feedback from the group of gamers her routinely plays with. He is good, but he also is 13, no wheres near as accomplished or skilled as most painters here. He would not know how to react to a \"2-This is crap\" comment and most likely he would stop painting. My thoughts again are this is a great place to look and learn, but lately a lousy place for encouragement through scoring or comments. OK, now I think I have kicked that dead horse for the last time...

We just have to accept that there are going to people who are angry, jealous, envious or whatever and will lash out.

To be honest, complaining about it really doesn\'t solve anything (although it may make you feel better) and it certainly won\'t stop those that are giving low scores just to do it.

However, if you\'re wanting to try and solve problems with the voting, here are some possible solutions:

Rework the whole voting system somehow. Not sure what could be done, but there might be a way.

Remove the scoring system. I know that this site is mostly about voting on minis and such, but maybe something else needs to be done.

Don\'t allow voting without commenting. If you\'re going to vote, you have to say something. It might discourage some people from throwing out a vote of 1 if their name\'s going to be attached to it.

Allow a breakdown of how many of each vote was cast; i.e. how many voted 1, how many voted 5, etc. That way, you can see that x amount of people voted a 7 or 8, while there\'s one vote of 1 that\'s bringing the score down. For those that are subscribers, we have the option to see what the average is from registered voters. Many times this average differs (sometimes greatly) from the displayed average. This mini is a good example. It\'s showing an average of 3.8, but the registered average is 4.6.

Allow only subscribing users to vote. Seems a bit elitist, but it does stop random people from simply coming in and voting 1 on everything. Non-subscribers can still view the galleries and see what the average votes are and so on and so forth; they just can\'t vote.

These are just some ideas. They may work; they may not.
