Fantasy style basing question

Hi All,

I wanted to see if anyone could advise on base style for fantasy figures. I want to mix up some of my older figs (warhammer, d&d, reaper, ex)with newer ones (AOW, enigma, wyrd, warmachine, ex) and wanted to ask what do people think is a more appropriate style of base to use for fantasy figures (square or lip). I know figure scale size is an issue, but most of my human, elves, and dwarves are 32mm and a 25mm square base doesn't look well with those, however for gaming, most manufacturers prefer you use there fantasy base E.G. square. Another issue is I have ordered a few new style monster figures (banebeasts, ex) which require 70-120mm bases and I have seen a few resin lip base manufacture which are that size, but not the square bases. :brushwave:

Any advice would be appreciated,

Thanks

I agree with Mr. Inacage

I use round because I find it more aestetically pleasing...but if you are trying to sell them as gaming pieces, they probably should conform.

i mix and match, but i tend to keep groups of minis on consistent bases & themes. of course i use my figs with a fantasy skirmish game engine that works with all base types and models, so its really a matter of preference for me.
it really depends on what you intend to use them for - if you plan on ranking them up often, square bases are nice to make it easier to keep a tidy formation. round bases are generally superior for skirmish type formations. as for big creatures - sometimes the right base is very hard to find, so i make them! its not too hard a task to make an even sheet of sculpy on a cookie sheet, and cut the appropriate size out ( cups are good for making round bases, and plastic craft store boxes are good for square bases). with a little sandpaper you can have a smooth, professional looking custom base for those odd sized models.

I recently settled on 25mm round. Suits the games I play & I got fed up of the piddly 20mm squares that so many GW minis come with. Too much restriction glueing together for ranking rather than fun to paint minis :)

Cheers, B.
