A great actor and not just for the Superman movies, the irony is that he was pushing for safety helmet awareness when horseriding and then ended up having his neck broke in a horse riding accident.
He will be greatly missed.

The sheer tenacity he showed in fighting his disability proved he was truly a superhero.......
It is sad, true. It is always sad when someone dies, and Reeve was a good actor.
But all this \"He was a hero\" thing... I don\'t know. Did he care at all about handicapped people before he himself broke his neck? As far as I know he didn\'t. He started to care when it hit him, and let\'s face it, we all would when we were the ones on the receiving end. I don\'t think it\'s heroic, it\'s just pure \"egoism\" (I use this word because I don\'t know any english word for \"Selbstzweck\").

Yet sadly, it DOES take a tragedy to make people see \'other\' sides.
I do believe he did a lot of great things, and used his celebrity to further his cause, which is admirable, when he could have simply withdrew himself from everyone.
People who become crusaders may have turned a blind eye towards those things before a tragedy, but it doesn\'t really lessen their passion afterwards.

I assume that the \'old\' Superman movies are the ones with Christoper Reeve? To me the \'old\' Superman movies are with the barrel chested George Reeves in Black and white...
Superman 2 was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. It came out in the theatre when I was about 12 or so and it was the first movie I ever saw where the audience actually applauded (and loudly) when the movie was over. Of course, now looking back, the movie was terribly cheesy, but man it sure was cool when I was that age!!

He managed nearly ten years in the condition he was in. The fact that he carried on at all, let alone decided to try to do something constructive with his life deserves the utmost respect. Don\'t think I could do it.

You have a valid point, Mosch. However, to me its the fact that Reeve fought his terrible disability instead of just giving in to it. Sure he had loads of money for private medical care and help though... Hmmmm....

Reeves is the original movie Superman. This is from the era when the bad guy would unload the gun on Supes, the bullets bouncing off his chest, then the bad guy would throw the empty gun at Supes, who would deftly *duck* the toss.

I fully agree with Mosch. Listen to Mosch, he\'s da man.
As for his carrying on in spite of his handicap, I heard on TV that he credited his wife for giving him the will not to commit suicide. I had a witty remark about this, but it\'d probably be inappropriate now that he\'s dead. :innocent:

I have seen the old Superman with George Reeves. It was very cool. Still, I saw Christopher first and will alway see him as Superman.

I believe that there are some poor excuses for people on this planet. People who screw the poor out of money. People who take advantage of the ignorant and infirm. And then we have people who dedicate their lives to finding a cure for spinal chord injuries. What an asshole. How dare he speak out for any cause. What right has a person who is completely disabled to speak on behalf of completely disabled people? He should have just died. The world would have been better off without him.
Obviously that was sarcasm. What kind of pathetic ass believes it is wrong to have a change of heart!!!!!????? Is there no forgiveness in this world anymore? How dare you say that because he didn\'t care about paralysis before he was paralized that he was a hypocrite. Besides, who is to say that he did not give to charity before he was paralized? I don\'t know if he did or didn\'t. What if he did, but he simply didn\'t have a focus?
My belief is that crap like this comes from people who are so hollow themselves that they try to spoil the good of other people. Don\'t try and take away Mr. Reeve\'s activism just because he waited until he was in his 40s to become paralized.
