Hi everyone

and welcome to my very first W.I.P. and project log . I thought now that i finally got a decent camera and some time i can show some of my current work. These are all minis for my cryx army i started years ago. After some failed attemps at painting a good looking black army ( never, ever again ) , i finaly gave up and tried something completely different from the official paintjob. Fortunately i found Automatons Article on true metals and glazing over at the Ozz Painter Forum. After some experimentation i painted the Deathjack with this technique and i´m really happy with the result:beer::
The entire Mini (except the gold and the souls ) was basecoated with a 1:1 Mix of vallejo metal medium and mithril silver. The basecoat was first given some depth by applying very dilluted GW scorpion green over the entire Surface and was then shaded by adding more and more Vallejo Sepia and finally some black to the glaze. The gold parts are some mix of the Vallejo bronce colors and shaded with blue brown and black

next in line are the Soulhunter and the wither shadow combine

had some trouble shooting pictures of the whole minatures , but i hope these will do.

i did the same armour i used for the Deathjack and tried green flesh with purple shadows and a neutral grey for the skin to combine all the details and make them stay out. so far it worked, but i think the skin is still a bit plain. i´m trying to give it more depth with glazes of dark grey and black but i could use some tips here ( maybe dark green glazes ?? )

My bonejacks : repainting them all ( and unfortunately i got alot of them :drunk: ) in different oxidized metal colors, heres the first litle bugger :

and finally the infantry: thats the first of 8 banethralls , again i´m trying to paint old oxidized metal

and finally some finished painjobs. Nothing spectecular and only painted to tabletop standard, but i think they look good

Wow! I have to say that is a very impressive looking army. I really like that technique, I had never heard of something like that before. Brilliant!

Matt thanks for the compliment, but as i wrote under the pics in my album, this technique comes from Automaton on the Ozzpainter forum ( can´t find the link right now ).
He wrote a great tutorial on glazing metals. I just \"adapted\" the technique to my army by trying some different colours. Basically this whole Army is the Result of my frustration due to my inabillity to paint black lol

well i promise to post new pics ( some pics on how to do that metal i used for teh deathjack ) but i got alot to do, so be patient with me ( I will be propably able to post something new on Saturday )

well at least i think it was pretty quick considered thatt i was really surprised how good it looks. the torso (without the arms) was 5,6 hours at most. the part i needed the most time for was the big armourplate in the middle, since i head to work really clean.

a tutorial on how to do the metalls comes soon, i´m painting right now and i think i can upload the first pics tomorrow.

And i´m back

things went on much quicker than i thought and i did a little step by step on how i did the armour of the Deathjack . I had completely forgoten that i still had an unpainted scrapethrall that is perfect for showing this since its about 60 % metall lol

Anyway, i tried to shot some decent pics, i hope they work, so let´s start:


DISCLAIMER: This Techinque is based on Automatons Article, so any credits for the idea goes to him. I don´t wanna show off with someone elses work. thats why i´m telling you this

I started with priming the miniature. All things that were going to be painted with metal received a black under coat , the rest was primed white to make it easier to paint the undead skin and the bones. Always paint the metal first when you use that technuique since it tends to bre a little messy.

The basicprinciple of that technique is to pain the metal \"backwards\". Instead of beginning with the darkest tone of metal that is then succesively highlighted i start with the lightest shade as a basecoat , which is then progressively glazed and shaded

So The first step was to give all the metal parts a smooth, light silverbasecoat. I mixed
Mithril Silver and Vallejo Metal Medium in a ratio of 2:1 and thinned it down to a milklike consistency . Vallejo Metall Medium is simply pure metal pigm,ents without any added colour, which makes it even lighter then mithril silver.
the mix was then painted on the minis in 2 - 3 thin layers tto receave a smooth colour and avoid any big metal flakes that would make the basecoat uneven. That´s really important since the glaze will later flow into any recess

step 1

the next step is really simple: i thinned down GW scorpion green to a really watery consistency ( about ten parts of water and one part paint ). a little bit of dishing soap was added to the water to break up the surface tension, glaze medium would of cause also be an option. the green was then painted on all the metal. thanks to the soap/ glace the colour is less likely to pool ( which would be the worst thing that could happen ). its important to make sure that all the metal parts were given a glace and that the metal is still visible unde r the green

step 2

now i slowly build up the shadows by adding more and more Vallejo Sepia to the green. the first ratio is about green : Sepia 2:1. this should creat e a dark greenish colour. this colour is applied to the entire metall, except for the parts that receive the most light and were i would nusually paint the lightest higlights. i made sure i painted away from the highlights and always moved the brush from the lightest parts to the shadows. Thats important since you will move the pigments with the tip of your brush, and most pigments will be on the spot where you take the brush away from the mini . i repeated this step with the first mixure untill i couldn´t see any change in the cour. i then added more sepia and painted a smaller area, once again moving the brush towards the shadows . over time i added more and more sepia and painted smaller and smaller areas, till only teh deepest recesses are left .this slowly builds up opaque, coloured shadows

in the end i have pure sepia ( plus the dish soap always remenber that ). i added a little birt of black for the deepest shadows, too outline the armour plates, and blackline the gears and hoses in his belly

well , thats all folks ! Now in the end you could go back and strenghten the highlights by painting very dilluted glaces of mithril Silver / Metal Medium over these spots, but if youre going to do this, be carfefull and use a small brush, that can´t hold alot of paint since you dont wanna metal in your shadows

so i hope that was helpful. In my opinion this works best with big areas and would probably look good on tanks ( would like to see this on a nurgle tank in combination with some worn of gold)

finally time for updating this thread
- it´s been a while but i finally made some process

i worked mostly on the withershadow combine , some solos and a different attemp on the metal i used on the deathjack. i would have done more , but then i maked a big mistake : i bought Mortenebra. It´s a tiny mini and it´s made of 16 parts .... and none of this part (average diameter : about 0.5 millimeter ) can be glued without pining ... :cussing:. after a little nervous breakdown in the shop , a set of 0.1 millimeter drillbits and much adult language i was able to assemble that b****. Believe me thats nothing i wanna repeat.

Mortenbra, still in an early stage, some legs are still not attached sso i can reach the skirt with a brush. Btw, the skull that is pierced by her left \"leg\" isn´t there just to look good . it´s the thing that holds the leg in place
her skirt is still very w.i.p., since i got problems higlighting my turqoise. it´s a mixture of vallejo scurf green , olive and another light blue - green to create a desatured turqoise. any idea what would be the a simple way ? should i just go with adding ivory to the mix or use lighter greens ( scorpion green for example since this was the green used for the armour and would help sticking with a limited pallete )







the wither shadow combine. i probably spent too much time for the skulls on the leaders base. it´s the skull pile from GW´s Khorne champion on feet and i tried my best , but i have to say the quality of some of the skulls is really poor.the skirts are higlightd from dark red/brown to pale yellow and shaded with a sepia /blue ink mxture, i hope one can see that on the pics.
i would also like to hear your honest opinion about the cogwheels on the base ( lucky ebay hit ) there not painted yet but i´d like to know if you think they go with the base.









Orin Midwinter. still wondering if he looks grim or is simply constipated. i looked on some of the faces of minis here and tried to paint a greenish, sick skin with purple shadows , plus a very limitedpallete with only blue and red tones in it. i´m not sure about the blueish metal i have to admit




and finally my repainted bonejack with milliput tongue ( the idea is from another painter here on CMON, so give him credit if you like the idea)
and a new attempt on the weathered metal look

here i need your honest opinion : does it look evil enough for an undead army or to comical ??

wow lol pretty damn good, i really like the way you did the metals they look very realistic and since you used really thin layers the metallics didnt clump up and distort the surfaces....
