the high renaissance/transitional baroque period is my favourite

so many good names have been dropped so far...most of \'em are artists i would have recommended...
some that are missin\' from my favorites are robert williams(very modern, with a twisted sensibility, and hot ladies), van gogh(of course), diego rivera(although he did murals in the 20\'s, they are still relevent today), picasso(his cubist stuff was groundbreakin\' in his time), and many more i don\'t have the time to list...

you\'re openin\' a can of worms here, \'cause art appreciation is a snowball that will quickly become an avalanche...there are centuries of brilliant works out there!!!

@DR: i think that the pre-raphaelites should be on the top of the list for any mini painter...the transperancies, the details, and allusions to the the old tales that have influenced fantasy art, are so inspirational...

@matt: bob ross is good fun...he made it all look so easy, and alaska was a huge influence on him...he even had a pet \"happy squirrel\"...

@liz: have fun divin\' into the bottomless pool of wonder that is art history...

Sweet, I can appreciate almost every type of art there is, but there is some that I prefer more over others, one being this one. He is inspiration for an art school kid like me =) Right now he is one of my favorites for sure.

There was a great Turner/Whistler/Monet exhibit in Toronto a while back, I didn\'t appreciate his work until then (I think I\'d only seen one or two pics of it in my old art history textbook).

We didn\'t actually do much studying of art history or for that matter, get taught anything much at all in school art classes. We did, however, go to London a couple of times and so I got to see Turner\'s work at the what is now called the tate Britain gallery. There\'s a permanent exhibition of his there.

I guess my tastes lean much more towards illustrators than traditional (or non-traditional) artists.

H.R. Giger, the Brother Hildebrandt, Franzetta, Valejo, etc. To me, these speak more to me about encapsualting an entire world in a single image. I guess I like to escape a lot too and nothing inspired me more that seeing a good piece I can escape in.

I don\'t get much out of most abstract (although some Cubism does catch my eyes) and I like a lot of the Art Deco movement as well but could never name anyone

EDIT: After thinking about it some more, I think I\'m attracted to the more literal style than than interpretive art.

I really like Franz Marc\'s animal paintings, his \"Foxes\" in particular:

i have always enjoyed norman rockwell\'s stuff. it\'s old fashioned but he catches little snippets of time in such a lovely way

saw a couple of painting by a fella called eero jarnefelt (i can\'t be arsed to fins the appropriate accents!) in finland and especially liked the burn beating (the look on the girls face actually took my breath away when i saw her):

i like brom and his dark visions

mini wise, jes goodwyn knows how to capture the essence of what he is doing beautifully. i have always loved adrians smith\'s attention to detail and john blanche\'s insanity (if not his style)

i have always enjoyed the comic book work of simon davies as well

Of course his paintings would not be seen in a fancy gallery next to works by Monet, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, etc.

I like Bob Ross and his painting methodology and if you watch him over a protracted period you come to realise that his work does have echos of Impressionism in it.
While he mostly painted imaginary landscapes I\'m pretty sure the likes of Monet wouldn\'t be to averse to trying his techniques and developing further from them. (Yes Bob is still being shown on SKY in the early mornings 13 years after he passed away)

Dabbling (badly) in water colours has made me respect artists who can make Paintings \"Come Alive\". The UK has The Society for All Artists HERE which sponsers The Painting and Drawing Channel which has helped me a lot in understanding some techniques about 2D art and allowed me to appreciate it more. (plus it\'s not been unhelpful on taking it towards my minis).
