Hello, I was just wondering what kind of music you all like to listen to when you sit down to paint a miniature? Personally I like to listen to classical music such as: Beethoven\'s \'9th Symphony\' & Gustav Holst\'s suite \'The Planets\' plus movie soundtracks like: Gladiator, Braveheart, Willow & Lord of the Rings. I find that good music complements painting miniatures and don\'t think I could paint without it. How \'bout you guys?

Classical and instrumental soundtracks like Gladiator, LOTR, TTT, 13th Warrior, Blackhawk Down, and would like to get Braveheart but can\'t find it locally (yet).

Classic Rock and Roll - the power mad crunching cords of the late 1960\'s Brit invasion (Floyd, Tull, the Stones) or the 1970\'s Southern Rock backlash, or the late 1970\'s early 1980\'s Punk sounds of the Ramones, Blondie, Wendy O. Williams and their ilk.

Painting Music

I certainly agree that music and painting go hand in hand. I can\'t just pick one type of music though. I try to tailor the tunes to what I\'m painting. Like Slayer or Motorhead or Godsmack when painting Khorne, or psychodelia like Floyd, Radiohead, and Air when painting Tzeentch. It was LotR soundtrack all the way when I worked on Sauron and the Balrog. Choirs and hymns for WitchHunters etc... It sure helps get you in the right state of mind, and if you really love to listen to music then you can enjoy two great hobbies at once.:)

hrm, can\'t pick one :) .

I like all sorts, including dead silence - s\'probably my favourite. I\'ve also found it\'s completely irrelevant what I\'m painting. Recently I\'ve been listening to Shihad/Pacifier who are sorta heavy rockish, some soundtrack stuff (like the Matrix), mellow alternative stuff, Coldplay... but that\'s really just because I like it :) . Most soundtrack-classical doesn\'t do it for me, I get bored.

When I\'m painting large amounts of stuff, I really prefer silence because it\'s easier to zone - music provides too much awareness of the passage of time (as in, holy crap the albumn\'s done already? you mean I just spent 75 mins and I\'m only halfway through the unit\'s armour basecoat?!)

Don\'t we all know that feeling. Is this a psychological phemomenon akin to the effects of relativity? Does time go faster the more we concentrate on something?:)
Or does the relativity effect get reversed when Relatives are visiting? lol

Hey, you forgot to include black metal in your list!

Well, I\'ll select death metal then ;)

I used to listen to what is really my favourite, AC/DC or Metallica or Scorpions, but some calmer tones help to concentrate, so I rather listen to Deep Purple, Led Zepellin or Queen. Makes a good painting atmosphere! Corvus - I´m really wandereing how one can concentrate when listening to Black Sabbath or JudasPreist or whatever black metal is (I´m not an expert)

Steelcult, I thank you for saying these beautiful words!

I\'d add The Velvet Underground, 60ft Dolls, BRMC, Lou Reed (for a giggle), The Wedding Present, The Libertines and a bit of the old Simon and Garfunkel. To round it all off I\'d throw in Mclusky! If you ain\'t heard of em, go buy the second record called Do Dallas. Fooking amaaaaazing!

Oh, and I like a bit of the Godfather, but the original score by one of the director\'s siblings. Real Sicilian knees-up tunes! And the Ukrainians. They play...Ukrainian music! Wow! The Wedding Present collaborated with them and made a top album.

Anyone for a music forum?

Other bands I like:

Zabrinski
Super Furry Animals
Manic Street Preachers (and not just cos they\'re Welsh!)
The Parkinsons
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Cinerama

Music, I love you.

new age...

somehow, when I paint fantasy minis, I found it appropriate to listen to new age music such as Yanni, Enya or Secret Garden. :)

Hi Corvus, I origionally included Black Metal, its just that you can only list ten things when setting up the poll. I also wanted to include: Country & Western, Opera, Indian Raaga, R&B, Silence etc, etc...

Oh and Micha, I think Black Metal is hardcore metal played by a bunch of dudes wearing black T-shirts (just kidding) :D

Black metal is very fast metal (mostly from northern europe), vocals are screams or grunts and often there are also keyboards and female vocals there... Most popular modern Black Metal bands are Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Immortal and Marduk.

Strangely enough despite knowing very little of the language my playlist has been full of japanese pop...X-Japan, L\'arc en Ciel, Ayumi Hamasaki, Mika Nakashima..
I seem to find it easier on my brain as when I\'m listening to music where I understand what\'s being said, I end up concentrating on/singing to the music rather than focusing on the paintjob.... so most of my painting music tends to end up as either soundtracks or foreign music. Although I guess as a side result of this, I\'ve been able to listen to some pretty fantastic japanese bands that I otherwise never would have heard of :)

I\'m with Shroud here.
Great classical instrumental soundtracks is what gets me going while painting. Just throw in a few anime soundtracks and new age stuff and I\'m set to go.
