Feedback faux pas

People courageously post images of their work on this site in the hope of receiving some intelligent feedback and/or constructive criticism. In general, it would appear to me, as an inexperienced newcomer, that this is exactly what they get. I have noticed however, that not all comments are as useful or constructive as they might be, and feel that some of these comments themselves should be subject to a degree of public scrutiny, particularly if their comments are inappropriate, inane, or uninformed. I feel there is a potential need therefore, to collect, collate and display these comments for the general good.
(I would suggest that all comments should be current and genuine and that the number of the corresponding image should be available if required.).
I will happily kick-off this event by submitting the sentence:

\"I\'d love to see NMM with metallic paint\".

Actually, that one\'s not so crazy - the idea being that the grays used to do it are instead metallics - say Gunbolt Metal on up to Mithril Silver for the highest highlights. Sounds oxymoronic but theoretically it should work yet I can\'t recall any good examples at the moment. I spose it\'s not technically NMM any more at that point but the replication of where light falls on a metal object should conceivably work as well as described above.

I know, I know . . I didn\'t answer the bleedin\' question . . . .

NMM with metal aside (It CAN work!), I don\'t see too many comments that are blunders per se... It\'s not really what they say, it\'s that 5 people have to repeat it. I mean, how many times do you need to hear \"Blurry pic\" \"Your blending is off\" \"That looks like a duck\". This may be because the comments take time to pop up and if everyone posts on the same day, they wouldn\'t see the other comments. Also, things like this should be known to the artist already, so stop ragging on them about it, kay?

Chrispy,

Or how many times to you get the same question over and over, even AFTER you post the response to it? lol

I haven;t had that happen to me, the only case I commented on my comments was on my Marcus DeathWatch Marine. I thought that the mini had been cursed from the get-go and the satrical attempts at humor were lacking.. Big words I use.. good... :p

What really gets my goat are the fanboy comments:but the emperor\'s champion should be black,GW says slaanesh color is pink, why does your terminator captain have a trophy rack- that\'s a chaos thingl lol
,Rating: 6 very nice I want it! My army would look great if I had that!-??? - one of my fav\'s.

Real feedback, the way it\'s meant here on CMON

In complete disagreement with the above comment, I am a big fan of continuity within a given universe. For instance, when I paint a mini, I want it to match or reflect the intent of the artist who conceived the mini. So, when I paint an Emperor’s champion purple, I WANT someone to lean in and tell me about the storyline of the universe, so my mini doesn’t look like some heretical Slaaneshi mutant. On several occasions, I’ve had to repaint a mini because what I had thought the mini would look cool as, in fact didn’t match the continuity of the 40k universe. I’ve heard of kids who show up to games with camouflage Ultramarines, and were GLAD when someone pointed out that Ultramarines are supposed to be blue, etc.

Besides, there’s nothing wrong with telling someone where they messed up. Pay close attention to the sentence right over the picture: “Pretend you’re a Golden Demon judge. Painting skill, imagination, and STYLE are key!” So, since the STYLE part of the aforementioned criticism is what is in question here, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with telling someone that their particular STYLE is out of sync. After all, the moderators here at Cool Mini or Not say you should, right? After all, a Golden Demon judge looking over a purple Emperor’s champion would pass it over in half a heartbeat.

Besides, if someone intentionally paints a purple Emperor’s champion, and they don’t want to hear criticism over the correct color scheme, let them say “Oh, BTW you Citadel Color Nazis, I KNOW that it’s supposed to be black, but I felt that [insert reason for purple paint job here]…etc., etc. So, then you could skip straight to the part where the viewer then looks past the glaring contradiction of the fluff snafu, and goes “Hey, I never thought about it that way, so, yeah. It does look kick butt.”

And hey, if people can’t handle criticism, then they shouldn’t post here, where people scrutinize their mini. Many of us don’t want to only hear “Oh boy, it’s so cool,” because we’re looking for criticism in the literal sense.

gentle disagreement

Hi Chronique - I\'m a new member her myself but I have also noticed a LOT of reviewer bias coming into feedback. I agree that it is nice to have a general theme (especially in legions or army-based designs) in some pieces of mini art. But I\'d bet big money that the person who made the sculpt didn\'t want a gazillion carbon clones of the box art lying around. If I released a professional scultp, I\'d want to go out and see the variation that people who enjoyed my work brought to my sculpt.

Correct me if I\'m wrong, but this is a place for people to display their mini artwork. Since art is not stagnant, variety, mutations, and playing with the original \"intent\" of the sculptor\'s design are all part of that Golden Demon\'s \"STYLE\". Stifling what could otherwise be some amazing creative efforts just to match continuity or community expectations is a little shortsighted, IMO.

I\'d have to agree with you there, Otter. After all, if the minis had to be a certain color, they\'d come pre-painted like toys (or Mage Knight).

If you want continuity in your models, that\'s fine. I like continuity in mine too, but I don\'t expect it to be the same from army to army. For example: How many people want an Ultramarines command squad who buy the boxed set? I\'m guessing around 15 percent, at most. So all those people who paint the models up are wrong?

Reading my own stuff in this post, it reminds me of those historical modellers who claim that \"Your Tiger tank isn\'t the right shade of Panzer yellow.\" Umm, there\'s a few things wrong with that statement.
1.) It\'s my model, so don\'t be telling me what colors to use on it...
2.) Panzer paint was shipped out as a paste, and was mixed with whatever the soldiers had in the field (mud, urine, used motor oil, water, coca-cola, whatever) so there is no standard for most of the colors...

No kidding, no one is talking about general critisism (FANBOY lol )! Criticism is good and healthy, artistic critisicsm that is.There are GW discussion boards out there for the rest. GW changes their fluff on a whim and has done so many times,so continuity my @$%. I LOVE the premise of the 40k universe, but NO ONE is going to be dictating my color scheme. I guess some people love clone armies good for you, and maybe there are people out there that think that pink noise marines are cool too!
Don\'t be upset if the comment was yours, most people don\'t even take time to post comments.
I can only speak for myself,I try to judge minis regardless of sculpt and whether I hate the scheme or not (like pink and black) on purely execution alone...we can\'t all be masterclass painters.

Fine, be ignorant.

Did I touch a nerve? Oh well, too bad we can’t all be “fanboys” if by fanboy you mean that we read books that go with our minis. Besides, what are you whining about, you got $50 for your “green warrior”?

I reiterate:

1 - “Pretend you’re a Golden Demon judge. Painting skill, imagination, and STYLE are key!” Had I been a Golden Demon judge, I would have arbitrarily tossed your mini aside and not even given you the courtesy of an explanation. How was I to know at the time that you didn’t care about the idea of the story, as your description was vague and brief at best?

2 - Calm down. No one is “dictating” your color scheme, so stop judging your manhood by the minis you paint (That mean SOOO much to you, and are SOOO precious, as you have them for all of five minutes before you sell them on eBay)

3 - If you don’t want criticism, don’t post on a site where your minis are scrutinized.

4 - Stop whining.

hmmm... I thought this was a forum for adults?

Touch a nerve, not even on your best day!
Smiley face also stands as laughing out loud which means a joke. Not hard to get your goat,don\'t even have to try.

Whining? This is just a light hearted post with examples of what some(not all of us) are considering faux pas. I\'ve had some straigt up insulting and rude comments on some, esp. older stuff that I didn\'t post, because they aren not amusing and self explanatory and not the point of this discussion. As far as the \"green guy\" is concerned some like him, some don\'t that\'s the way the ball bounces. Either way you are not a golden demon judge despite being a \"masterclass\" painter and a humble guy, so it\'s a moot point. However I won\'t insult your work, your dragon is well executed. It just happened to be your comment, which I didn\'t even know when I posted this, so you got hot under the collar, well turn on a fan, stop whining. I already said thanks for the comment, most people don\'t even bother to leave one.

Anyhow, I agree with the Otter and Badaab who happened to express what I had to say far more eloquently and without aggravating anyone. Thanks guys.

non traditional schemes

:idea:I am thinking of doing my bloodletters with black skin, red teeth and horns. Anyone have comments and or suggestions about the scheme and whether I should use blues, grays or browns for highlights.
Thanks

Yeah...

Yeah, you did get on my nerves, because turning around now and saying that you were engaging in light-hearted prattle, when you were ranting and contradicting yourself, doesn’t change the fact that you were doing just that.

There’s nothing wrong with valid criticism, even if you don’t particularly like it.

You say: “Criticism is good and healthy, artistic critisicsm that is.” but, “What really gets my goat are the fanboy comments:but the emperor\'s champion should be black,GW says…” So, you like criticism, just not a certain kind? You want to pick and choose that which makes you most comfortable? Sorry, criticism doesn’t always work that way.

You say: “GW changes their fluff on a whim and has done so many times,so continuity my @$%” yet, you say you’re not a “fanboy” and therefore don’t keep up on the fluff? As far as I know, being a fan, their continuity is pretty solid. So, you don’t know, but you do know? That’s neat! Are you short and tall, too?

And you were using the fanboy remark as an insult, however weak, like you are above those “lame gamers” that do those “gamer things” even if you deny it now, and yes, that did get on my nerves. This whole site is about gaming, otherwise you would have minis to paint, so don’t pretend that you weren’t trying to act superior.

You think the world is carpeted, but in fact you are wearing slippers. It’s not cruel to suggest that if one has a “Golden Dragon®” that is painted silver, that something may be wrong. You can’t pick and choose the criticism that you want to hear. Deal. …And your bloodletters will be out of sync, too.

And to Badabb, this is a forum for discussion, and I happen to like banter.

blah...blah...blah.........YAWN!!

An elitist gamer, what a concept. The two terms should be mutually exclusive.

No need to pretend about \"fanboy\" comment. A fan is just that - a fan of the hobby, \"fanboy\" (I didn\'t coin it) is a person who blindly follows a hobby, thinks everything is 100% gospel, thinks the game designers are right all the time, the rules are always balanced fair and playtested and not influenced by marketing , and that rulezboys are actual authorities on the rules.

It\'s hard to believe my three line post started this(my very first flame war/police action). No need to explain yourself, you don\'t like the champ, I don\'t like fluffy posts on a painting forum. The end.

Since you so enjoy my banter as I do yours, please enjoy the last words,as I am sure you will. Have a blast. That\'s all I have to say about this conversation.

However the question on the daemons still stands any other comments? My army is based on Legion of the Damned scheme,so I think red daemons would just stand out. Any ideas to tie them in with the rest of it?

Yeah, says you.

You assume everything. I don\'t even play Warhammer. So who\'s the fanboy? I just thought I\'d let you run with that, seeing as how it was your only point.

Pitynoman, you paint those Bloodletters any way you want to paint them. I think the variation on the traditional scheme (you\'re still using the same palette but in a different combination) will look very interesting. It\'s been said many times, in many places, and very often by GW people themselves...paint them the way YOU want them to look. Would a pink bunny rabbit space marine fit in the \'fluff\'? Prolly not, but there\'s some on this very site that are well outside the realm of the \'grim darkness of the far future\' that are receiving perfectly fine scores, if the score is what you go by. They give you the basic guidelines, but it\'s your imagination that makes the model come to life.

Do whatever you want.....

Hey that colour Scheme sounds fine, a Full-timer at my local gw did Red skinned Bloodletters with the hair painted as fire, the looked cool and this was for the stores army, even GW dont follow their own so Called \"rules\" for colour schemes.

Feedback faux pas??????

Gee, seems a few of us totally missed the point of this forum. I think finn17 intended to start a lighthearted discussion of the comments that some of us found amusing. And by \"lighthearted discussion\", I don\'t mean a babbling tirade on which is the \"correct\" way to paint OUR OWN minis!

Alas, finn, your intentions were good, but it seems that others are intent on committing \"forum faux pas\"! Better luck next time....
