Feedback on Throne

Hey everyone, I'd like to get some feed back on, as of yet, my only submission to this site. I appreciate the votes I've gotten, but I'm not receiving any feedback on what could be improved on the piece and that is what I'm really looking for.

Thanks for any inputs and advice!

The stone and bones look fine and clean. More stages, could be good, for more contrast.

The part that leaps out as could do with a bit more is the material. I don't know the context of the mini, is it leather or skin yanked off a victim or two? As it is, just brown, it's not suggestive of being anything and could do with some shading and highlighting to address that, the contrast would make it *pop* more.

Could maybe add some some brown staining on the stone, if the bones have been there for some time the bone marrow could leak juicyness. Could do similar with the nails pinning the material to the stone, have them rusted with a couple of millimetres of rust staining running down.

Overall, good and clean and paintjob, could benefit from a few more stages in shading/highlighting for contrast.

Yep I agree with Wyrmypops just needs a little more shading and highlight. Try hitting it with a wash of GW devlan mud. That is a nice easy way to help the shading.

@wyrmpops:

When you say stages, what do you mean precisely?

The camera darkened the material a great deal, in person it is a lighter brown; however, I do see your point in that it is rather flat. It seems that I've mostly kept the elements of the mini separate from each other instead of having one affect the other (the stone staining brown and rust from the nails). Besides those two, do you see any other elements that could interact?

@DVS Design:

I'm a cheap S.O.B., so I use generic craft paints for painting. I'll see if I can find an equivalent color to wash it with.

@Empchild:

Is there a problem or issue with them looking dry brushed?

I did dry brush the brown onto the bones, but otherwise the base color was painted on normally.

By stages, I mean. One stage could be the basecoat, another stage could be inserting some shading, another stage a level of highlight, then further stages each adding additional stages of highlight or a bit of shading. More of all that creates a depth, and when the tonal range goes from dark shading to a light highlight that high contrast really pops dramatically.

I hear you on the camera flattening what you've done. Having camera issues myself. If it's a big concern might be worth jumping into some of the threads on all that. Sounds like a graphic applications (Photoshop, or the free GIMP could help) as it might just be a matter of "auto levels" to address the camera flattening things out.

On another look, that material does look like flayed skin. The patch on the ground looks like it ends in a hand. With that in mind, could add some layers to evoke it's dead skin-ness. Maybe some pink/purple/dark red on the underside, or a tattoo of something like a heart with the word "mum" underneath.

I think this looks okay but more highlights generally would be good - lighter upwards-facing surfaces would make what you already have done look all the better. And remove your mouldlines!

Their is not a problem with drybrush, heck we all do it. You just asked for feedback, and depending upon the use of this piece is how you want it to look. Drybrush is great for just gamming, but if your trying to push yourself as a paint then drybrush is not a good thing.
